Skimmer Q&A Thread

I spoke with the guy at fragtastic he warned me against aquamaxx. Sighting they are cheaply made. I have the Omega 150 and he said I would have to be ok with much lower quality materials.

The omega 150 is the highest quality (material wise) skimmer available sub 500 $ ever made. They're made by royal exclusive but use the same pumps as aquamaxx. You want balance in a skimmer, who cares about titanium screws and thicker than needed acrylic. The aquamaxx skimmers are cell cast acrylic and mine hasn't cracked or crazed in three years. I also have a hob-1 from aquamaxx that's just as thick as my buddies reef octopus skimmer. These skimmers aren't cheap by no means and they work extremely well. I'll post three unsatisfied customer threads for any skimmer you name for every one thread you post of unsatisfied aquamaxx users.

Any other ~$300 skimmers for a heavily stocked 125G besides the Aquamaxx EM 200? Tried to snag a used Omega 150 but failed...

Finally going to pull the trigger and sell the SWC 150. It is having trouble keeping up now that my fish stock has slowly started to grow.

Major plus would be if it had a chance to work on a 180G if I upgraded in the next year to 18 months.

Thanks.

Hmm? I disagree completely regarding the aquamaxx! I own a coneS CO1 and have run a BK 160mini. The BK is a beautiful skimmer (kind of a work of art) but the aquamaxx is by no means cheaply made. Mine is polished acrylic and while the gauge is not as thick as my mini was, it is well designed and a solid performer.

makes me wonder why the guys at fragtastic would bash such a well reviewed mid$range skimmer. Oh and BTW, the shark 1.5 (sicce 2.0) on my CO 1 is quieter than the red dragon on my 160mini and isn't as finecky. I sold the mini after a larger tank upgrade fell through.

Edit: The ConeS CO 1 doesn't use the sk400 pump it uses the shark 1.5 (sicce 2.0). I had the SK400 on the brain-sorry

The ConeS CO-1 would rock a system that size. The EM100 would do a good job too. Both the CO-1 and EM100 have high outputs and run best at deeper levels (9-10"). Some of the initial reviewers on MD gave the EM100 poor reviews due to splashing but soon realized they needed to run the skimmer deeper due to the output height. It may or may not be ideal for you depending on your sump depth so keep that in mind.

I have no idea. He spent 20 minutes trying to lead me toward the RO POV.

That is a strong possibility.

my em200 gets here on Monday, so i will post my impressions on it when i get it. my only other skimmer has been a reef dynamics ins100 so i cant state how it will compare to a vertex but i will at least say if its an improvement over my current skimmer.

prob will take a week or so to get a true idea of how it skims vs the ins100

Give it a vinegar bath and it'll break in quickly. What size tank do you have again.

90 gal with around 30 gal sump. also am running bio pellet reactor, just fyi. i guess bio pellets increase skim mate.

You'll have some idle time. Don't let that discourage you though. Aquamaxx ratings on the em series are almost spot on. That skimmer will skim a 150 heavy bio load easy. Keep that in mind

nice, maybe i will be able to add another fish or two.

Easily. You'll also be able to feed them accordingly (2 to 3 Times a day for some fish) instead of once every other day like some people suggest. I'd max out on fish. A dozen appropriately sized fish no problem.

Just a note that works for me

When you get it, save a little skimmate from your old skimmer if you can. a couple drops down the neck of the new skimmer after day 1 always helps me cut the break in time by half. It's not any amount of DOC's that will affect the system adversly.

;)
