Skimmer Q&A Thread

and like PRDubois said try raising it up higher. Looks like it's rated to be in 8-10" of water. Try 7" to start with then lower it.

I haven't dosed anything anything as tanks is still in first stage of cycle. I read that it could of been the filter sock, as that is also brand new. I raised it again last night to 7 1/2". seems to be work much better. although still not quite right. I will continue to play around with heights and be more patient when adjusting it :D Thanks Guys

Hey all,

I'm looking for a skimmer to replace an SCA 302 on a 50 gallon heavily stocked sps system. I'm not looking at anything too fancy since I have an a upgrade all geared up and ready to go in April. The SCA just isn't cutting it anymore and I need something to hold me over until then. I have a Vertex Omega 150 for the upgrade. So, with that said want to stay economical for this one since I'll only be using it for about 8 months at most.

I was looking at the Reef Octopus SS110 and the Skimz sn123. Any suggestions/experiences on these two? Any other similarly priced skimmers I should consider?

I've inly ever used the Reef Octopus 110 classic and it seems to pull skim consistently for me. It's very quiet and the price was reasonable compared to others I looked at. My system is 70 total gallons.

The only thing I don't like about the 110 is no drain port. I'd like to run a neck cleaner and skimate locker.

I just stumbled across the ATB nano. Anyone have any experience with that? Considering tossing the Vertex Omega 150 and going with the ATB nano 1

I'm not too experienced with skimmers (as I said this is my first) but there is a drain port to run the skim out (tube in the bottom of the collection cup) if that's what you mean.

Oh ok thanks I thought they didn't have one I couldn't see one in any of the vendors pictures

I'll be home late tomorrow and try to snap a couple pictures of mine if you would like. I didn't expect to have it either until I unboxed and noticed it. If your planning to go another route (which obviously is perfectly fine) hopefully the info will help the next guy.

If you've got the budget for that I'd go with the ATB nano and start using it now. Otherwise I'd just go with the Vertex Omega 150 you already have and start using it now.

You don't think the 150 would be overkill on only 5p gallons?

I told myself get the best within reason on this build. I almost bought a bk but then got cold feet so maybe I'll have to give the atb a try

It's not needed for that small of a tank but it will work fine. I'd only recommend this if you truly are going to be upgrading in the near future.

Well it's either I upgrade or make decorative ornaments out of all the equipment sitting in the garage! But all jokes aside the upgrade is 100% guaranteed. I wish you could get the ATB mikro over the ATB nano. I don't like how the nano appears to just friction fit to the base.

I am running the ATB Nano One on my frag tank. My Frag tank has 70gal total water volume. Skimmer works great. You wont get any reviews unless someone outside the USA chimes in. This product is brand new to the USA.

Ok thanks for the info I wasn't finding much reviews. So for the Nano one does the skimmer body just slide into the bade plate? There aren't any screws holding I down or anything? The nano 1 looks like a simpler version of the ATB mikro which to my understanding is not yet available in the states

Nano would be good now and the upgrade in the future. Unless you end up bigger then 125-150 in which I'd look at the 840v2.
