Slakker's Oceanic 58g

Awe he looks like a trouble maker!

I never changed my oldest dog's name when we brought her home from the humane society either. Some names just stick!

So how much chaos has Chip caused?

Shockingly not too much...granted it's been only three days, but so far he's been really well behaved. He's been doing not a small amount of hiding under the bed at night, which generally results in him complaining until I fish him out and bring him up.

So far my roommate's cat (Kyle, previously Scooby, which I think is better than Kyle, but whatever) has been the real trouble maker, climbing around where he shouldn't be (counters, table, fish tanks, bath tub), but truth be told the two are generally too busy pestering each other to get into any real trouble.

Update!

Update!

It's been a very, very long time since I have posted an update...

Overall things are going pretty well...the plywood on the stand got absurdly moldy because I didn't bother to seal it (was in a rush to get it up to keep the kittens out...) so those have been taken down and treated with some sort of magical mold killer and sealed up.

My frogspawn has been bleaching out pretty steadily for the past two, three weeks, maybe a month. I've been thinking it was my temperature, but three different thermometers are recording my cap at 84 or 85 degrees, which i don't think is enough to cause bleaching.

The Blasto is growing great, and looks awesome.

I've got this lovely film algae growing on my sand, it's worst with the lights on:

And finally a full tank shot:

Little Chip is still a hooligan, but is overall very well behaved. He has gotten a lot more adventurous and a LOT more cuddly. He often curls up for a nap in my lap. Both cats enjoying getting nose and paw prints all over my glass trying to terrorize the fish, but the clowns seem to have figured out that they can't get them and aren't really afraid.

Tank is looking great Slakker!!

I love your cat, he looks so cool!

Keep up the great work on the tank

Thanks Spleify!

I appreciate the kind words, but the tank looks terrible right now. I noticed during my water change today that the brown blanket covering the sand bed is also on some of my rocks, and appears to be getting worse in a few places. I'm conemplating doing a 3-day "lights out" treatment to see what happens, but I'm not sure what the frogspawn needs right now is darkness.

I wish I could figure out why it's bleaching...it's been my favorite coral since I got it. I guess I'll run another round of tests tomorrow after things have settled down from the water change and see how my numbers are looking.

I also moved a few more of the smaller rocks out of the 12g into the refugium and cleaned a good amount of gross film algae out of there. It had formed a fairly thick and somewhat plastic-y coating where the water flows over the baffles...truly disgusting, but I guess that's the benefit of the sump, all of that crap grows down there and (so far) stays out of the display.

Slakker, you might want to try and move the frogspawn down to the sand bed to see if that helps. It MAY be getting to much light. I have 2 frogspawns and a hammer doing great under PC lighting.

The lights out shouldn't hurt anything, I have done it a few times and everything did fine.

Great tip...I had just finished wedging it between a couple rocks down on the sandbed before I read your post :D We'll see how it does, it was a lot lower in the nano tank, so maybe that was the problem.

Picked up some MONSTER nassarius snails today (seriously...the shells are over an inch long.) and some margarita snails to try to get on top of this algae issue. Can anyone recommend anything that will eat what I assume to be diatoms? It's a brownish film that is growing primarily on the sand, but has started taking hold on the rocks as well.

Already I wish I had gone slightly bigger with my tank...I had a very, very hard time walking out of the store this afternoon without taking a 2" Kole tang with me. While I'm sure it would be fine in a 3' tank for quite some time, i don't think I could make myself part with it when it did get too big.

Anyone wanna make my day and tell me I'm wrong and it would be just fine in the 58 for the remainder of the foreseeable future?

Pictures!

Pictures!

Some more pictures. Got some new corals today, will post pictures of them in a while after they've had a bit to get settled in.

Another depressing picture of the frogspawn... :(

Nice new additions. I'm sorry to hear about the frogspawn though. Since I'm not a softy person I have nothing to offer up in the way of suggestions.

Thanks :D

Yeah, it's really odd...I think it may have something to do with the bulb change, but who knows. I'll just have to do my best to keep my water quality good, work on getting the temp down, and try to find a spot that it likes. Hopefully it'll recover.

Just got done macgyvering an old PC Case fan to hook up to DC current and now have it hanging in my canopy blowing past the Halide.

Once I get a set of hole saws at my apartment I'll be drilling a hole in the side of the canopy and setting the fan to blow air out, I think.

very nice tank and build thread... I like the blastos especially. I would actually stop moving the frogspawn. It looks like it is low enough in the tank. I've read numerous stories of corals being damaged/killed by moving them around too much. Good job on not taking home the Kole. I love those fish, but you're right, they'd get too big for the tank too quickly. Good luck.

Thanks for the kind words!

The frogspawn is pretty much as low as it can get. If anything it would be two or three months before I moved it to a different spot, and only if it continued to get worse.

I'd suggest having the fan blow in and cut a vent or two in the top of the hood... fans often don't live long in a salt heavy environment, so drawing in cool fresh air beats pushing out hot salty air any day

Tank is looking good... just wait out the diatom/cyano bloom, do your water changes and try not to overfeed (still the hardest thing for me to learn :))

Keep up the good work and keep those photos comming

Hey Slakker lookin good. I agree that moving the frogspawn more will probably only add stress.

I'd try to get that temp more stable.... Ive seen LPS corals look not-so-happy at temps around 85 or so (my house AC broke last year when I had a 20g).... and a sinularia softy turned to mush on me.

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

Mykel, the top of my canopy is just screened in...I had been hoping it would be enough ventilation to keep the temps under control, but that doesn't seem to be working out...lol

Do you think it makes a difference whether I run the fan out the back or the side of the canopy?
