SLASH Members Unite!

Those two look about as gracious as the 6-8 of us it took to move Dbuesking's tank.

That is a sweet table.

I thought about joining SLASH, I wanted to talk with some people at the frag swap to get a better idea about how the club was (Whoever was selling the Hawkins and some tabling acro that I can't remember the name for, awesome frags. Thanks again for the nice pieces). I didn't have much time that day because I had about 30 minutes to wander around before heading off to a going away party. After reading this thread and seeing the attitude of some of the members, I'm sort of happy that I didn't bother. As someone stated earlier, if I want drama, I can get it from TV, or my daughters for that matter.

I've kept reef tanks for the past 8 years and never joined a club, didn't see any benefit in it. This thread just reaffirms that belief for me.

Well, I'm a slash member. I have socialized at pizza night and enjoyed the company of many others who are in the hobby. Every question I have asked has been answered clearly by people who understand the level I'm at without talking down or acting like the hobby requires a masters degree in reef keeping. I have learned about many things visiting members successful systems. I took advantage of the swap and stocked my frag-rack. SLASH did a great job with all aspects of the swap, and to me it was clear local retail vendors could live with-out it.

The club never misrepresented itself to me when I joined, it was clearly a social group of hobbyists, unlike other groups that adhere to what I consider a boring color by numbers calander with night classes on reefing. As far as drama goes it seems to be generated by people who are not members of SLASH in this thread. It would seem the title "slash memebers unite!" Is somehow to complex or misleading, and has attracted random butt-hurt drama queens and other fan-boys.

I hear the frag swap was on the low side this fall, anyone want to brainstorm a few ways to bump our core membership up? What are we not doing as a club to grow, or maintain our membership? Speak freely:)

Tom.

So the initial post is asking how to grow membership. I post a comment on why I ultimately did not want to join. Then you retort with the highly intellectual comment of calling me a butt-hurt drama queen. I think that sums up nicely why your club is not growing the way you want it to. Internet tough guys are so passe.

First, one of your "leaders" who also happens to be a mod here attacks the owner of a local fish store. A store that happened to ask me if I was going to your frag swap every time I stepped into it in for 3 or 4 weeks before the swap. They also talked about the club and asked if I had thought about joining it. Some of the other stores that I entered either didn't bother mentioning it, or brought it up but then said they really didn't get much benefit from having your club around since you never buy anything when you show up for your store visits.

Well, good luck with your little club. I sure your close minded attitude and ad hominem attacks will get you far in life.

Funny, I'm just a member, not a "leader" and if you think I was referring to you, ok tough guy. Like I stated the drama seems to be generated by non-members and fan-boys, if you feel one of those titles fits you, ok.

Tom,(a basic level group member only stating his opinion on the networked fan-boy posts in this thread.)

You must work in marketing. :uhoh2:

I'm glad I started this thread because it has shown a lot:) For those who think I am a leader here, you are correct, always have been and always will be. The fact that I've been a moderator here on Reef Central for 12 years doesn't have anything to do with this thread, or does it:confused:?

The store called Marine Solutions and I go back a long way:) Brad and the guys that worked there were very good to me and helped me build one of the largest reef systems here in Saint Louis, along with several of my friends here in this forum. Capncapo, Lost Marbles(RIP), Hershel, Fade, Farmer, Smack, Rams, GEO and many others were key in getting my system to where it's at today. I cherish the friendships that have helped me along the way. I also value the LFS that have been good to our club, you all know who you are. I'm not about drama, I'm about meeting up with like-minded folks and talking reef tanks, plain and simple.

Those thinking about joining or on the sidelines for years are just missing out. There are many social media types that like to view from the outside but never get involved on the inside, that's fine for them, but that's not what we are all about. The once a month Saturday library meeting didn't work for many of us, that's why we started SLASH which is over 200 members strong. The LFS drama is brought on by the LFS owners and employees, the market here is very competitive and we have lots of options available. Our club is above loyalties to any one store, always has been. The folks whining on this thread are pretty much bitter folks with an agenda, the club doesn't have an agenda, we are in it for fun and for free. We help each other without expectations of loyalty to any one LFS.

I'm ordering from Mitch at www.livestockusa.org this month if anyone wants to join in on a box lot. We are also planning our next pizza night at a store near you, cya there if you wanna hang SLASH style.

I was selling a hawkins and "Leishman's" tabling acro so that might have been me - my son and I had the small stand in the back corner next to mpgrant and his awesome 3D printer. If that was me then I hope I was friendly to you and tried to tell you a little bit about the corals - I also tried to ask people if they belonged to the club and encourage people to get onto the RC/SLASH site to ask questions. If I didn't do that then you might have caught me when I was hungry and too busy thinking about hamburgers.

In any case, I have so say that I am a pretty active member of the club and that this thread is the first time I've seen any "drama" in the club. I've been to lots of pizza nights and frag swaps and I never hear about drama - and I'm pretty tuned to it having two teenage kids.

If you don't want to join the club and be an official paying member that is cool but I would still encourage you to participate on this site, ask questions, provide answers, and post lots of pictures. We like pictures.

If you got any corals from me then I hope they are doing well. If not, let me know and I'll hook you up with some replacements - courtesy of SLASH.

Yes, it was you. You answered all my questions about the Leishman's acro, pulled up some pictures on your phone to show me how it looks grown out. You talked briefly about the club. The frags are doing well, the Leishman's acro didn't seem to like my bayer dip, lost a little flesh but it's coming back. The hawkins showed no ill effects though.

I wanted to grab a few of the printed ecotech holders, but I was low on cash and time by then. They looked pretty sharp though. He should look into making printed window screen pieces. I saw a thread where someone printed some rounded corners to match her tank. I'd gladly pay for a plastic frame instead of using the aluminum ones that are sold

I have been out for about 2 years or so due to a travel schedule at my last job. I will say during my time and many pizza nights, i had more fun socializing and brain storming than i would have thought. Anyone of the members that go a long way back would do anything they could to help. From dragging a 200 gallon 7 foot tank up a set of stairs and relocating to another basement. To opening up their homes to allow people to gather and enjoy the company and great food ( nooks wings are the best!!) Going back over threads from the time i have been a way it appears that same level is still here. There have been names that have come and gone ( mine included) and many that have stayed with it. My hats off to everyone that has stayed and offered up their personal experiences ( hopefully not Dsmacked refractometers ) and helped with the constant noob questions ( i had many of my own when i started)
