SLASH Volunteering to Help with The Saint Louis Science Center!!

It wasn't aimed at you levon15. It was just a phrase from kvcgsxr600 on the first page. :)
The tank is on the second floor to the left. In the kids learning area. Unless you have young kids. You won't be interested in anything but the tank. Good luck guys/ gals, and keep us all posted.

If anyone talks to dave tell him I have the info on who is in charge of this tank and she is willing to let us help . I have a direct number to her and her name . Have him call me or the number I PM ed to him . She is a really nice ladie and will take any help givin .

John

OK, first I want to thank John for getting us in contact with Susanne at the St. Louis Science Center:thumbsup:

Second, for all the passionate hobbyists with pitchforks in hand, time to put your money where your mouth is:D

The Discovery Room is open from 10am-3:45pm, on Thursday this area is closed to the public. I made an appointment with Susanne this coming Thursday at 1pm for a few of us that want to go to evaluate their aquarium and bring that information back here to this group.

I will bring any pertinent information about their aquarium to this thread. I will take test kits for just about everything that can be measured and post the results here. I will also report on the amount of liverock, substrate, fish, inverts and corals.

I hope our visit this week can afford some information on what their budget is, what role we can play in active maintenance, and what we can do to bring this tank to pristine water quality. I would also hope that once the tank is brought to optimal health that we could donate corals, fish and inverts to make this a true treasure for the little ones coming to the St. Louis Science Center.

Susanne was very grateful for our willingness to help even though there was mention of pitchforks in this thread:lol:. Resources such as we have here on Reef Central and in this club are priceless, we have many dedicated reef hobbyists here willing to help so this should be a great experience for all.

If you are willing/able to go this Thursday, please send me a private message so we can get an idea of who is going.

Thanks!

I have a mud sump I can donate . Do we know what size tank this ? I will donate a frag of any hard or soft coral I have that can be fragged for the little ones .

John

I believe it is a 125 standard with two emperor 400s and normal output lighting. Nook put me on the list.

One of the important details to be hammered out after Thursday is whether or not they want to run this tank on a sump. They had a flood in the past and not sure if a sump is an option for them.

Donations after we get our gameplan down and the water quality in line will be awesome! For sake of ease, I am thinking soft corals primarily, but as time goes on and we have a stable tank perhaps we could venture into some LPS and hardier SPS coral.

That is correct! Glad you can make it!

I guess after they let us know what we can do to help. I have always thought of trying to make this a project tank for the group and document it here. I just could never get the right person to listen down there or a contact. Others have tried as well. This is awesome the closer it becomes reality. We can always reach out to the LFS and vendors for support as well and give them recognition. There would be a lot involved and any contribution would make this a huge success for the Hobby in Saint Louis. Start small and build the relationship and trust with the Science Center. Thanks Dave and John.

Don't know what I can do, and I can't make it this Thursday, but I am wanting to help, just don't know where I could be the most useful.

I hear everyone is going to the science center tomorrow to see what needs to be done, I can't make it I have to work. I assume you guys will make a list of what will be needed to get that tank where it needs to be. My suggestion is that if anyone has some stuff laying around not being used maybe we could all donate some stuff to keep costs down. I'm sure if you post the list people rumage through stuff and come up with something. I know I could maybe help. Just and idea though.

I am sure we have some stuff laying around! According to Rich, I no longer have my Poor Man's Golf Game! Seems he pieced out all the PVC it took to make it and now a few friends of ours have Poor Mans Golf PVC under and around their tanks! LOL I was wondering where it disappeared to...now I know!

I'm sure you have a nice calcium reactor lying around you could donate... ;)

LMAO, I sure do. But I don't think Rich would allow that. But, I can donate whatever I win at the next swap...hehehe

I would love to be a part of this. Funny we go to the science center a lot, my 5 year old son loves that place. Though we never went in this room I didn't know there was a tank.

I can't make it on Thurs. I have to work, but I'd be happy to help maintain the tank, and I'll donate what I can. Let's see what you guy going find out. I'd like to see the list that Nook's going to post. Hopefully you post and "where" the tanks at, and then a "what" the tank needs to be straightened out as well as a "what" the sceince center will allow. I'm sure if we spoke to some of the LSF they too would be glad to help.

Although the only time I can help is on the weekend, this is the time they are the busiest, I think that is the best time. To do a water change when they are packed full of folks. It would give us the opportunity to explain what we are doing and why we are doing it, which leads to everything to do with this hobby. If hobbiest were there during prime time, interacting with the public and teaching about it, more poeple may become interested in it. It could even lead to people who always wanted a SW tank but knew nothing about them to starting one up knowing theirs a whole CLUB of people to help them gain the knowledge needed and help along the way. I think this could only be a + for SLASH. I'd be glad to be there on a weekend to help.

na stupid, Nook and I were going to spend most of our time looking up the history of your cousins... :D

Don't leave the comfort of your home for that, here.
