HELP! We brought a dogface puffer home last night (given to us for free also), problem is my small V-tail grouper is beating the crap out of the poor little guy.

He is about 4 1/2" seems very healthy, nice color. Please PM, want to find a good permanent home for him ASAP.

won't the fish store take him back?

sorry to hear it, they are great fish. have you tried rearranging the aquascape, taking the grouper out for a while? sometimes a few hours in a bucket and being put back into a rearranged tank is a good attitude adjustment.

not from LFS, from an individual who wants to do a reef setup.

actually we are trying to figure out a way to put a divider in the 90 gal. make it outta plexi sheet. anyone ever done this?

Sorry, I missed that you got it for free. It might be easier for you to make a divider out of egg crate. You can use cable ties if you need to connect any pieces together.

Dogface puffers are one of my favorite fish. Hope you can make it work out.

This is probably your best bet, I would try this before a divider.

Personally I'd try to find him a good home, because splitting a 90 gallon in half won't keep a puffer happy for long. If he is fed right he'll double in size in a year.

At the risk of asking a question that has been asked countless times before (I can't seem to find a good thread on it, though), is there any chance of a dogface puffer working out ok in a reef tank? I assume they will leave corals alone, but eat any small hermit, shrimp, snail, etc., they can fit in their mouths. Correct?

a dogface especially will eat everything. Well chew on, think of it as a puppy in his chewing phase. Nothing is safe.

Yup, that is why we have him, ate a little pink anenome, snails, crabs. Owner wanted to setup a reef tank, so.....

Thanks for the PM's and other inquiries everyone. Right now we have a divider. (Thanks LisaD for the eggcrate vs plexi idea, much easier).

For the time being we are going to keep him, get him eating and see how things go. After we get him established and happy in the tank, we will probably try some rearranging of the rocks and giving grouper a time out for a day or two and see how that works.

That's what I would do. Let him settle in, get comfortable and know where the hiding places are. Then shake the grouper up a bit and rearrange the tank. It has often worked for me.
