Smell

My tank has been up and running for about a month and a half. And it is really starting to stink. I'm going to do a water change this evening I have been running carbon in a TLF150 the entire time it had been cycling. Are there any other tricks I should know about?

I believe it is fully cycled as ammonia is at zero nitrites and nitrates are at zero.

It smells like algae pad after you clean the glass or skim mate. Strongest is near the sump.

It has only been on for about 4 days. The cup was just cleaned...

I had that problem and found that one of my overflows was not working. Pulled the stand pipe, let it drain out, put back and never had the problem again.

A marine tank just does not smell. The smell of rotten eggs, eg, indicates hydrogen sulphide, which is a real problem. Is there any black in your sandbed? Can you describe the odor?

i dunno man, mine reeks too. My basement smells like the LFS.

It shouldn't, you should look for the underlying problem causing the smell. The only time my tanks have ever stunk is when I get lazy with the skimmer cup.

Not sure where the issue would be. I have a line from the skimmer cup into a big empty pretzel jar that has bleach in it.

It's not a horrid stank, it just smells like the LFS.

A reef tank should not smell like rotten eggs (sulfur) nor should it small like the bay at low tide continuously; however, it is not unusual for it to smell a bit after a big feeding, for example. Smell should quickly dissipate though.

It smells like skimmate.

I think what is happening is my protein skimmer reaking up the place with al the air going through it.

Think I am going to do the carbon over the skimmer cup lid. Also just changed out my carbon in my reactor. Might add another reactor full till I get it under control.
