Snails are leaving the water??? why?

Korrine

You could get a ticket!!
My tank just finished cycling March 31. :D Have about 25ish lbs lr in a 29g tank...guessing on weight but somewhere about that weight.

ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 5-10
sg 1.024-1.025
ph 8.2
temp 78F

I just added 3 astrea snails last night. This morning they were towards the top of the tank and I topped off b/c of evaporation and they are climbing above the water line (2 of the 3 are) . Is that bad or occasionally normal?

Those snails are the only occupants atm.

Thanks,
Kj

Many snails breathe water, other lay eggs above the waterline. honestly off the top of my head I don't remember if astreas are one of them but I would not worry

As long as they stay wet, they'll be fine. Mine don't come out of my tank, but the ones on my brothers tank do. I wouldn't worry about it... they'll likely come out and go back down. :)

ok thanks. I feel better now. I was paranoid that something was wrong with my water and that's why they were leaving it.

Thanks for the replies. RC is the bomb!! :D

Astreas in my case have been waterline dwellers during the day. At night they make their way down. Nerites on the other hand can make it out of the water. I at times find Nerites on the carpet in the morning. Oddly enough they are still alive. I think it has to do with something about their natural habitat and all that stuff :)

Just wait till you find a fish on your carpet:eek1: . My asterias hang out at the water line from time to time. no biggie

Most astraea species are intertidal species and need to be able to leave the water to maintain proper respiration.

Didn't know that... that's neat. That would explain why mine would crawl into the air on my overflow. :)

I have acidently netted an astrea snail and left it in the cabinet in the net for 24hrs and it was still fine when I dumped it back into the tank. I thought it was dead for sure. Pocked it because I was going to remove it and use the shell but it jumped when I poked it so I put it back in the tank and it went on about its business.

I have 2 dogs and 1 cat. Chances are they will eat the fish, but not the snail.
