Snails from ebay

Honestly I was a poor college student and bought 4 turbo's. they did ok for a while then one by one they died. however they layed babies everwhere, and now I must have over 50 baby turbos running around.

I haven't kept the receipts, but there is no way that I've spent over $100 on snails in the past 11 years of keeping many reef aquariums.
If you need that many snails to control nuisance algae you might want to check into getting an RO unit if you don't already have one.
I'd love to see a pic of a baby turbo. :)

Your right Gary, and who am i to argue with a genius like you, but in my case, i had a 220 with 400lbs of rock and after it cycle the algae bloomed on me. So tehre are ways you can spend over 100 on snails.

My point wasnt to spend over 100 on snails, my point was simply you are gettin 40dollars worth of snails for what the others places charge for shippin, thats all

Call me what you will, but I'll still call it the way I see it.
The LFS's in Rochester usually have a decent selection of algae eating reef aquarium appropriate snails at very reasonable prices.
Incidentally, snails don't export. They recycle. So if you think they are the "cure" for nusiance algae- they aren't. They're merely a band-aid. (That's why I mentioned getting an RO unit.)
I'm sorry if I missed your point, Jiddy. When I saw the prices on the site you linked to my jaw hit the floor. I guess I shouldn't be shocked- I've seen worse.

Your definatly right on the snails arent a cure, but its like mowing your yard, thats not a cure either, but you do it right?

And i do have a great RO unit, got one cheap from AquaSafe on Ebay, id show you the link, but you'd prolly have a better hookup in NY.

You've caught me curiousity on the Jaw-Drop, im new to the SW hobby and dont have a great LFS selection (S.Dakota, lol) if you didnt shop at your great LFS's who would you rec for snails on the internet that dont have shocking prices? please share

The Stomatella in my aquarium have been handling the mowing of nuisance algae for the past several years.
I haven't purchased a snail for quite some time.
None of my livestock originated from an internet purchase.
If the LFS's couldn't hook me up, I'd ask fellow hobbyists for some snail broodstock.

Stomatella are nocturnal and not easily counted. I probably have hundreds (just a guess). Their population fluctuates with the availabilty of food (algae growth.) I also have some other as-of-yet unidentified algae eating snails in my aquarium, but their populations (although self sustaining) are much smaller than my Stomatella population. I've had no Turbos or Astreas for as long as I can remember. No hermits anymore, either. I tossed a couple Nassarius in the tank years ago, but they did not develop a self sustaining population.

I should have charged you more for those Stomatella :D

Seriously, I'm glad they're working out so well. The gift that keeps on giving...

Here's an example of Stomatella in my 10 gallon Nano... this is just 10 gallons!

Ask for some next time you go to a URS Meeting. I'm sure someone will bring them for you.

i have bought theses i have some over 2 years old... never had the red slime outbreak... and some i had left in a tank i had taken down ie left sandbed and moved tank outta sight outta mind well about 3 weeks later it was in the winter in a cold unheated house i found a bunch on the glass of the tank! i took them to my tank and they lived as well haha

Its been over a year since i purchased these snails and besides the big batch dying after a couple months the last 50 or so seemed to be ok and i noticed no big problems.....but i would never recomend them or buy anymore. I honestly dont think they put a dent in any algea i had but did eat any leftovers the fish didnt get.....
