Snails from local beach....

OK. Went to the beach(ocean) today with the wife and she decides to take a walk down the beach. Ahhhhhhhh...peace and quiet!:lmao: Only kidding!
She comes back with this cluster of snail shells stuck together and she thought it looked pretty and stuck it in the towel bag. Well, we get home and I take it out of the bag and put it on the counter. I look over a few minutes after and the cluster is moving!! I get a bowl of my reef tank water and put them in and there they are moving around as one unit.
My question...what the hell do I do with these snails??? Can they go into my display take or am I going back to the beach tomorrow to return them to where they came from?
Leave it to my wife!:fun4:

Definitely not! If for no other reason than they come from a completely different environment (temperate, shallow/shoreline).

do not return them to the beach either. your tank water might have something that our local waters dont need added

Definitely don't put them in your tank! You can set up a separate tank without a heater or set them free in the ocean. My kids bring stuff home, and after a couple of days we return it to the beach. If you're concerned about contaminating the ocean, don't pour the water in.

I would advise you when you get to the beach to stay a few hours as the snails may require a drip acclamation of up to 4 hours....hahah :D seriously tho dont put them in ur tank bring them back

Message Bett. She's big on bringing home stuff from the sound. And from my understanding she has kept some snails for a while now. I know she has an Asian shore crab in her fuge.

I put about 60 snails in my tank from the LI sound. A year later I still have at least a dozen kicking. No adverse affects. Most won't acclimate to constant warm water. The small nassarius snails have a chance. The big ones die almost immediately (can't remember the species name).

I also bring macro algae home and my tangs go nuts. Have done this multiple times 2 years in a row without negative recourse. I'd say listen to general opinion usually, but on this I disagree. If you're careful, there's plenty at the local beach to bring home.
