snorkeling in hawaii ?

We are on the big island now and as a new visitor I purchased the Big Island Revealed and hand been following it and yelp for guidance. We are seeing fantastic coral and fish while snorkeling so I will not be scuba diving this time. We of course paid to snorkel with the mantas and it was an experience of a lifetime.

We kayaked to Capt Cooks monument: video coming soon

We snorkeled at Beach 69: http://www.youtube.com/attribution_link?a=2RyrR27c8iI&u=/watch?v=r30m8cg9urA&feature=em-upload_owner

And did night snorkeling with the manta rays: http://www.youtube.com/attribution_link?a=pGm-ZFy6V3w&u=/watch?v=2GojaxWfYu0&feature=em-upload_owner

On Maui, I recommend Sheraton Black Rock at the north end of Kaanapali Beach. It's basically a big black outcropping of lava rock right in front of the Sheraton resort (I think you can park right at the Sheraton).

I also recommend Sheraton Black Rock. I went snorkeling there about 7 years ago. Unfortunately this was before I got into this hobby, but it was a nice spot. I'd love to go back. 2 minutes into the water and I was swimming with a large sea turtle! I was no further than 50 feet from shore. I can't recall the fish or coral I saw there because I wasn't familiar with the names then, but I was surrounded by amazing sights.

Been to all but Maui, but I have been to the other major islands. The na pali coast in Kaua'i was amazing. I highly recommend going out on a snorkeling tour also.

In the course of 4 hours I saw a 2 types of dolphins less than 5 feet away, a whale and her calf went UNDER the boat sea turtles and countless fish and coral.

You can't go wrong in Hawaii though :)

Thanks everyone for answer my questions and post in the thread. I just got back from Maui after 7 days there. What a beautiful place. Rented a car and pretty much drove around the whole island. I stayed at Sheraton resort and the Black Rock snorkel area is right behind the hotel. The water is warm and crystal clear. As soon as I get into the water, a giant turtle just swam up and brush my leg. ahaha.. gave me a good scare right there. I didn't see a single yellow tang like I wanted but to my surprise, I saw few baby Achilles tangs. Triggers and Wrasses are everywhere. Both I and my wife don't know how to swim and got seasick pretty easy, so we didn't try any other snorkeling areas. Its kind of suck that I didn't get to snorkel as much as I wanted to but the rest of the island is just simply beautiful. There are so many other stuffs to do and places to see. Driving down the highway with endless ocean on one side and tall mountain with clouds on top on the other side is pretty cool. If you haven't been to Hawaii, try it out. It is very beautiful, relaxing and just so warm.
