Did you ever reach out to avast marine to get their take on the magnet packaging material? Perhaps they would be able to either shed some light on the suspected heavy metal problem or do a redesign on their probe holder magnet packaging.

Every pump, whether return or circulation, has a magnet inside. Gyre is inside tank. Rotating magnets are susceptible to chafing damage, too. It sounds like all of the magnetic devices should be periodically inspected. Please inform us of the avast marine discussion.

My understanding is that the uncoated impeller magnets are ferrite based ceramic and do not rust while the plastic coated ones and probe holder magnets are rare earth, neodymium based and do rust. I can't confirm whether the rare earth magnets emit tungsten when they rust and my high levels could have been caused by the rusting of the stainless steel in the pump bolts. The issue Eshan found was that the cheap stainless steel used in impeller shafts and bolts in some Chinese made pumps will rust and emit tunsgten. The impeller magnets in those pumps were not the issue.

So between the barely rusting SS bolts and the dripping red rust magnet, my gut tells me its the magnet, but I can't be sure.

So this just happened.

Murder Suicide by my magnifica. Decided to take a walk into my closed loop inlets. First walk in the last 2 years!!

I'd list the fish but it's just too painful right now. Every one dead except the two clowns. Corals are so far looking ok.

Waiting for an emergency delivery of 200g fresh saltwater by Austin of California Aquariums. I only had 20g on hand. (Can't say enough good things about he and Elliot.)

In the meantime I'm skimming wet and set up two large canisters of carbon.

Well, the clowns and all of the corals made it through the night. The water is cloudy, but I attribute it to a bacteria bloom from the massive water change.

My wife wants another anemone, claiming it and the mating pair of Picasso's were the star attraction in the tank, particularly to our guests. That's true, but I'm not so sure she would have the same opinion if she knew how much I had invested in those fish. I don't think I want to take a chance like that again.

So this is what I lost and how long I've had each:

maybe its time to add a secondary source of flow. redundancy is key in keeping a healthy tank. Could add some powerheads.

I have a ton of flow. What happened was the mag moved from his rock onto the inlets of my closed loop. A bunch of tentacles were ripped off and sucked into the impellers, chopped up and spread into the water column.
