My new fish trap:


Take any large clear water bottle, cut the top off and remove any plactic wrapping, then attach it to the inside of your aquarium with two magnets (use a magfloat, any safe magnet) near the surface. I attach it from the bottom of the bottle to the side of my aquarium. Feed inside the bottle (turn the pumps off if they are strong) for a day or two.

Watch fish swim in to eat after it is trained and acclimated to it, quickly block the front with anything, and remove the bottle.

I have caught a bunch of fish in 1 day (One day feeding inside, ctach the next day once it is acclimated) with this. No hassel at all, just set, feed for a day and grab.

Im sure it could be improved, I just use a piece of acrylic like a trap door to block the front quickly.

I use a U shaped length of fexible PVC in the 55gal refugium tank with a bunch of small holes on the inner part of the U shape, the bubbles come out gently through the holes, the opening is near the surface. No microbubbles, no salt spray.


For the bigger 100 gal sump i use a coiled length of 1.5" pvc, no bubbles...

adjustment to fish trap-- after cutting the top off, invert it into the "body" of the bottle as if making a funnel into the bottle. Fish will swim in but can not swim out. Make sure the size of the hole is size specific according to which fish you want to trap. I've caught a few aggressive damsels in that manner. Sometimes instead of using food as bait, you can use another damsel as the more aggressive one will try to attack the one in the trap and thus trapping himself.

not sure if this ones been mentioned yet but my salt mixing bucket used to be a super-dirty mess. now instead of just putting a powerhead in i've attached a quickfilter and my water and bucket are always sparkling clean. it's kinda funny how we spend all the time and money on procuring clean water and then just add a bunch of dirt into it with our salt mixes...

hey you can clean your glass with windex.

For any noobies out there this guy was moved on and no you can't clean the glass with windex, as the Ammonia will kill all your fish. Try RO/DI water with a little Vinegar in it. Works great, and any overspray can be buffered out of the water easily.

Sheesh, sometimes I wonder about people's ethics.

nothing wrong with using RO/DI with vinegar (or for that matter, using straight vinegar) but you CAN clean the front glass with windex. Just don't spray it on the glass directly - spray it on a cloth away from the tank and wipe the glass down. While we need to be careful of spreading false information to newbies, we also need to stay away from scare tactics like "using Windex to clean your glass will kill all your fish". Spraying Windex directly into your tank may be a bigger issue - highly not recommended.

Having said that, I don't use Windex either (well, once) ... I just use plain water or often just polish with a microfiber towel on the outside since it doesn't get that dirty. The inside glass is another matter all together.

Yup, I use a spray bottle wit r/o with a squeegee to clean my glass. No napkins for me.

*edit* I don't use magnets on my acrylic tanks due to numerous scratches they create.

I've been using Windex to clean my glass for 12 years without a problem. I just make sure the hood and sump cabinet are closed so none goes in the water.

Wow.....this thread may be old but it is certainly timeless....I was "searching" something completely different and for whatever reason this thread came up and it was like a juicy novel...I was HOOKED...some things I knew but I learned some things and that is always good...
so..here's mine
I use rolling plant holders for my 5 gallon buckets when doing water changes..No lifting, sloshing, carrying heavy buckets...I just roll em from spot to spot...they are made for large potted plants so you can move em around on your patio or whatever. They are low to the ground and have excellent casters on them...and they have a raised perimiter ring that holds the bucket in so it won't slide off the edge..perfecto!!
