So, What other secrets are you all hiding from me???

If you have a 7-11 or other convience store around you take some of their straws! I use them for target feeding, flipping snails over and other things. The really long ones have a spoon like part at the end of them which is useful too... Ive even cut one to a point and scraped some coralline off my acrylic. Also, ive taken like 6 of them and put them together (end to end) to help me do things in my 90G and not get wet.

Also, as far as a siphon goes, tho the powerhead idea is the best ive seen, I use another technique from my freshwater days. I never have to suck the tube to get it started, i just take the tube and submerge both ends (and as much of the rest of the tubing) in the water. Once all (or most of) the air is out, cover the ends of the tube with your fingers, leave one end in the tank and put the other to your bucket and then move your hands from capping both ends. Works every time if done right, and if you dont have a powerhead in your tank (like my freshwater or fish only) this is perfect.

If you have a powerhead with a venturi port, find tubing that fits into port and long enough to fit into make-up water bucket. The vacuum of the venturi will pull the water into the system slowly and mix it with existing at the sametime.

If you have an aggressive fish you need to remove, place a mirror on the side of the tank. The fish will be so focused on it's reflection that it won't even notice a net. It will take only take minutes and you won't have to move a single rock.

You can buy nori at the grocery stores where the hippies shop for a much cheaper price than at the LFS.

Vegetarian fish also love the dulce seaweed the sell next to the sushi nori

Have you seen the little algae feeding clips with the plastic grids on them to hold the algae and keep it from getting ripped off and floating through the tank? Just go to HD or Lowes and buy one of the gutter screens. It's pretty cheap and then you just trim it to about 3" square. It keeps the dried algae from getting ripped off and it prolongs the feeding time. Tangs, b-flies can "peck" at it through the little holes.

It's been a while since anyone posted to this thread.

I was looking for a post on where to buy bucket clips. These clip onto five gallon buckets and hold the outlet tube from the RO/DI unit in place. One broke (good thing I bought 2) and I want to buy another one. Anyone know where to get them?

1. plastic hair clip
hairclip.jpg

Good for holding bags to the side of the tank to acclimate and keep from floating all over or falling in. Awesome for holding hose or electric cords out of the way - not to mention good for keeping your hair from falling into the tank. I constantly find long red hair in my reef.
I have about 12 of these handy around my tank at all times.

2. in a pinch a pair of pantyhose can double as a mesh bag for carbon. Boys be sure to ASK before taking these as this will cause war in your house. Don't say I didnt warn you! Cut off usually just below the knee area. Rinse in vinegar before using. Some people use special 'panty hose rinse' that coats the hose to inhibit running. I don't know if this is a residue

3. Rolled up poly blanket padding works in place of overpriced filter pads. It's 6 bucks a roll and you can get it at any walmart or craft store. Use it a few days and throw it away. No rinsing! The stuff ALSO works well as a soft get-into-the-corners cloth for cleaning

4. Green flat scrubby pads you get at the grocery store for cleaning pots and pans are EXCELLENT for cleaning GLASS aquariums! I can't stress how awesome this stuff is when cut to size and placed between the magnet and glass!

5. An Array of toothbrushes in baby, regular medium and denture. I like to zip tie the regular one to my siphon hose and use the aforementioned technique of siphoning while scrubbing with the toothbrush. Good for hair algae removal. :)

I'll add more as I think of them.

oh
6. Keep a log book with a list of all the fish, corals and other inverts in the tank. Include the latin names.

This way if you get something lovely that bites or stings you - the person that finds you on the floor next to your tank can take in the book and say 'something in this list got him'

My notebook listing my button polyps and other items that could cause problems were listed. Saved my life when I got button polyp goo in a cut on my thumb once and went to the hospital. ;)

I got a tip from a waitress a the local I-Hop. Use coffee filters to clean your glass. I like it better than newspaper, one because I don't get the paper and two because it doesn't leave behind the ink and fuzz from that recycled paper.

RO water is amazing, it works better then windex and is a great cleaner,

use it in your car as windsheild wiper fulid, its cheap, and it works so much better!

use it on anything.

The wifes pantyhose work great as temperary filter mesh bags.

Try to get her permission first :)

EDIT:
oops... Sorry didnt see this was posted already

Get a hold of a 30 or 60mL syringe for water sampling, measuring, dosing, etc. Put a cap on it and take it to your LFS for checking water. Put a needle in it w/ some hot water or kalk and inject it into aptasia, etc.
