So Who's This Tyree

We currently do not have any protein skimmers on any of our 7 farming reef systems.

Piercho, who are you quoting??
poknsnok, I would assume he is quoting Tyree! I have been to his facility and there are no skimmers. All his filtration done with live rock, sponges, and other filter feeding organisms. Very simple systems with high flow and 400 watt Radiums in luminarcs.

That is a rumor for sure. Steve is welcome at every wholesaler that I know of. He just got smart and stopped wasting his time there as all the cool stuff is in your tanks :) What might not be a nice looking coral to you, could possibly be unique to him. If people only knew what goes on behind the scenes to get nice stuff. Not just for him, but anybody. Everybody assumes that vendors are making a killing in their little businesses. Not true for most of them that's for sure.
Eric
I could of not said it in a better words, If people only knew behind the scenes, the high prices that vendors have to put up with and not to mention not so nice pieces that we need to get just to get the good ones, with the hard work, dealing with DOA's, shipping company not too nice at the end...probably just get even and hoping to get much...thats the truth....

buying frags 6 years in advance is nothing but giving tyree a loan to grow his corals and enjoy his hobby and business...if you are nice enough to do this then great...good for ya...me i would rather support my own coral growing with that 100 bucks and by the time i would have gotten a tyree frag i would have 4 fully grown out colonies and everyone drooling and wanting a frag of my stuff...just MHO

and the ferrarri analogy is simply retarded...you are comparing a 300,000 dollar car to a 100 dollar frag....if you have the money you can get the ferrarri NOW....but i think we all have the money and cant get the frag now.....THAT ANALOGY SUCKED BUT I STILL LIKE YOU!!!

yeah i twitched on the no skimmer thing..i am a BB'er though

if there were many more independently wealthy people.....there would be alot more tyree's out there....believe that

I don't know...I kind of think is a win-win for both Steve and the farmer. If you have a very unique and rare (or even not so rare but unique) coral and Steve takes a large frag and auctions the first piece and gives you the 50% from the auction then sets a price on the LE list the value of your coral is increased. You then can choose to sell frags to visitors and hobbyists for the going price as you see fit. A win-win. Some people will want the coral, others will not. Steve is marketing your coral, giving you the props on his website and, if others are so inclined, they can track you down for frags. Pretty ingenius if you ask me..plus the corals he has are truly very, very nice.

Tyree does not have you prepay for the frags:)

The deal is better yet. Tyree does not ask for a large frag. In my case it was 2 - 1" frags. One for farming and one for auction. In return he offered to pay me 50% of his planned LE price for each of the 2 frags or trade for 2 frags of other LE overstock frags. On top of that you get 50% of the auction. Also Tyree does not make a coral an LE if he cannot reproduce the color in his system. This happened to one of mine. Steve really wants to make sure that his clients get what they are paying for.

Poknsnok: it's on the front page of the web sight. I assume Tyree, or whoever set up the website, is the author. No skimmers on his systems is what his website claims. He sells the cryptic inverts that are used to filter his systems as kits.

big waiting list and or slow growth on that particular coral.... i wouldnt wait that long for a frag either but he does have some really really nice stuff..

Ive got a friend who frequents the Tyree warehouse and could have swarn he said he has skimmers in there. Buys some sweet stuff.

I've met the guy... Very cool person, super knowledgeable.

I am lucky to live in s. cal where is based.

If you can, pick his ear for 20 mins... He does have some seminars available that can be bought, slide shows .. on DVD.

Worth the money in my opinion.

It isnt hard to grow acropora... it is keeping the colonies for more than 3 yrs that is the difficult part.

Steve's going to star in the Roy Orbison version of Bubbahotep.

Seriously, he has some great stuff and I liked his talk at a Seabay meeting a few years ago.

Boy have these threads been beat to death. At least this one has a pic of him.

I was waiting for the Chuck Noris jokes to turn into Tyree jokes.

Tyree has his tank lights on 24/7. Not becuse his corals are afraid of the dark but because the dark is afraid of them.
