Sohal Ich for 3 weeks

Hi, my sohal has been ill since I purchased it ( perfect and quite fat :D) for about 3 weeks. All the time with ich: first week with just two or 3 white dots, but now since half of 2nd week it's covered on ich.

I have my UV lamp on all the day.
He eats nori algae enriched with garlic, but not as much as the other nasos and scopas.
He also bites rocks were there is algae..but he doesn't eat frozen nor fresh live artemia.Nor he doesn't eat nothing else..

He's getting thinner....
i'm worried, thanks in advance regards.

The UV is next to useless against ich. UV is very good against external bacterial infection but not ich.

Ich calls for a different approach: Systematic eradication.

thanks for the answer: what systematic erradication do you mean? what should I do?

WEll not sure I agree with the good old wooden reefer.....

UV does work if it is properly sized and the parasites go thru it at proper flow levels.

Now that your fish has ich, assuming its in your display tank I would remove the fish from that tank and set up a treatment tank. Your main tank needs to stay without fish for at least 12 weeks to be safe. Some say 8 weeks but I prefer to wait longer. If I were you knowing the advanced stage of ich you describe I would start treating with Cupramine by Seachem. Just amke sure you continue to mintor ammonia and your copper level. NEVER ADD sulfur based amonnia removers to a tank you are treating with copper.......

I have tried a couple of times with 15 Watt UV for a 50 gal system. No luck at all.

In theory, UV should have some effect, but not enough. May be the ich organism is too large or there is someting in its anatomy that impedes UV penetration.

Well I am installing a 150 watt unit on my 300 so in theory your 15 watt was not large enough should be more like a 25 watt...also depends on your flow rate thru the unit. If you are serious I suggest you speak to a sales person at emperor aquatics. They will size the right unit for you.

Agreed. This is correct, the UV sterilizers are all about radiation levels and flow rates. Most people use ridiculously small ones are their tanks and expect to have an impact.

UV's are not a cure for Ich, but if they are to have any chance of warding off a full blown attack, they must be sized properly.

Emperor, and Aqua UV, both have charts on their websites which calculate the exposure level required to kill certain parasites. These levels are often 4-5x greater than most people's setups.
