Solana tank owner thread.

I don't see why you couldn't remove it seems like it is only there to hold the media anyway which I do not even use.

I took a couple of videos of my tank not very good as you can tell and only used my S3. After I watched the first one I realize it was just actinics and one of my Vortechs is way too loud so I took another when all of the bulbs were on and no Vortechs running.

^that tank looks great. What equipment are you running?

Do you have a full tank shot?

I ended up removing the overflow plastic in the first chamber. What a pain that was :lol2: ...but the skimmer fits! I'm going to try and take a video today also.

The purpose of the overflow chute is to force the overflow down to the bottom of chamber 1 in order to 1) help dissipate any bubbles that may be formed from the overflow action, 2) to present as much "raw" overflow to feed the stock skimmer which has it's intake at the bottom.

That makes sense.

Thanks! Here is a recent pic from my phone. As far as equipment goes

2 mp10s
Nanoreefsystems skimmer
Nova extreme pro 6 bulb
Apex lite
Bubble magus dosers
Ato.com topoff
I also use the intake basket with carbon and phosguard

I think that is it.

This is true. However, I'm not experiencing any micro bubbles, and I don't have the stock skimmer. :) I will admit, sound reduction at the point of overflow requires some consideration. Even with the stock overflow pad present (which worked great when the overflow plastic was there) the noise is still greater than before. I'm going to have to figure this out. Also, the overflow "chute" seems to slow down the flow overall. I noticed an increase in turnover rate since removing the plastic.

Nice. So you pulled it out and that skimmer fit nice? I would really like to put an oversized skimmer like that in.

I was thinking about ordering the overflow foam holder from inTank. Do you think that would still work with the overflow gone?

I have this holder: it is designed to simply rest and be held in place within the chute. It is designed simply to keep the foam from sliding down into the chute. Thus, removal of the chute would render this device completely unusable.

I agree.. And I own that holder. It doesn't work without the chute.

I don't run a filter pad in the overflow chamber and my overflow is silent.

Mine was never quiet without the foam pad.

I can not run the pad I tried everytime I do the water level rises. I even tried the intank holder with a brand new pad from intank same thing. My overflow noise comes and goes sometimes I never hear it sometimes I do.

Man I would have to think of something then. Im very noise sensitive on the tank. Its in the living room near the tv and it drives the wife crazy. Another reason im trying to get rid of the stock skimmer.

Have you thought of a Hydor Slim Skim (or other narrow skimmer) in Chamber 2, and making a custom media tower out of eggcrate to fit in Chamber 1 (with chute intact)? Not the most efficient arrangement, and you may experience more gunk fouling the media faster, but putting down a filter pad on the base of the media tower may alleviate that.

This way, you can still maintain the chute with filter pad to cut down on overflow noise as much as possible.

Something I was thinking of doing myself someday since I got the Hydor Slim Skim extra with another tank that already had a HOB filter, but my stock Solana skimmer is plenty quiet for me so I'm sticking with it for the time being while the Hydor remains in storage.

Just a thought...

Just an update... I ended up zip-tying the foam pad in place, and raising the water level in the sump (it was a bit low) and the tank is extremely quiet now.

The JNS WS-1 is working great so far. I'm happy with the skimmate production.

Awesome. Hows the noise level on the skimmer itself? Does it poke out over the top of the tank much?

It's very quiet. Definitely the most quiet skimmer I've owned (and I've owned a lot of skimmers ).

I had to raise the skimmer up about four inches to make sure it was at the right water level, and the collection cup does stick out a bit. I honestly don't even notice it though.

Just curious, what are you guys using in the filter part on the overflow? I've been using those marineland rite size filter pads but they seem to clog up within a few hours. I need to find something that will last longer.
