Solana tank owner thread.

Has anyone opened up the overflow on theirs to increase flow through the back chambers? I was thinking about making the slots a little bit wider.

Ok I know this question gets asked about once a week but has anyone other than Sweet D drilled there tank for an overflow? I really want to do this mainly because I have been batteling PO4 for about 2 months now I have reduced my feeding to almost nothing, I have 10 gal fuge, I run GFO, and use RO water that test at almost 0 (key word is almost,) I do weekly water changes religiously and only have 4 tiny fish, and I still have high PO4 so I am thinking of trying a biopellet system with a sump for added water volume. Anyway any links you can send my way with ideas would be great.

Ok found the nr thread. Anyone know of a way to mod the skimmer so that the pump could be put in the same place the Sicce pump is located?

I have mine drilled. The overflow is in the center, and there are two returns aside it. I can't remember off the top of my head but I think the drain is 1inch and the returns are 3/4inch. I run a slow fuge and it works fine for me. I am working away on business at the moment so cant send photos. I also have trouble fighting PO4.

Thanks John for the relpy I might try the same setup but I would like to utilize the current return area im afrad this could be a probklem with back siphon in the event of a power failure.

OK so another question I am kinda afraid of drilling my tank and I would have to put a sump in the stand which means I would't have room for my ATO. So rather than do that I am thinking of upgrading my skimmer (currently stock) to the aquac remora hang on the back, and having a hang on the back bio-pellet reactor for PO4. My question is I dont have room for both of these on the back of the tank so one will have to go on the refugium which has a much slower turn over rate which one should I put on the refugium?

Excuse me if I misunderstand your question. Your sig says you have a 10g fuge on your Solana and I don't understand how this is configured.
There's plenty of space on the back of a Solana for an HOB skimmer and a biopellet reactor. I have an Aquamaxx HOB and a ViaAqua PR20 with biopellets on the back of my Solana. The PR20 would even fit in the Solan's 2nd chamber which I may do eventually. I just set up the PR20 a month ago and want to keep an eye it for a while before hiding it in the Solana's sump.

Those of you running a 9002 skimmer in the second chamber, do you see any issues putting chemipure elite in the first chamber (overflow) where the heater and stock skimmer usually reside? I need some carbon/gfo action until I can get my reactor working the way I want.

I have been working on a new LED build for my solana. It is WAY overkill, but I am looking at getting a larger tank and wanted to be able to use this over it when I get it rather than building another light. Here are the specs:

Custom built 18x18 heatsink
24 - 20k 3w LED's
24 - RB 3w LED's
12 - 10k 3w LED's
6 - standard blue 3w LED's
3 - UV 3w LED's
3 - Red 3w LED's
4 - RB moonlight 3w LED's
12 - 700mA dimmable buckpucks
1 - 350mA dimmable buckpucks
60 degree optics

All of the LED's amd optics were purchased from Satisled and my total cost for this fixture had been right about $500.

Yes, that is 72 LED's over a 34 gallon tank. As I said, it is WAY overkill, but should work nicely over a larger tank as well (looking at a 92 corner tank).
I am hoping that by putting so many different colors I can get closer to a full spectrum.

I was unable to find a heatsink that was large enough to work over the tank, at least at a decent price, so I decided to build my own. It is sort of an unorthodox idea but it seems to be working. I got a 1/4 inch aluminum plate and attached a bunch of 1/4 inch "C" channel to it. these are bolted to the plate and have thermal paste between them and the aluminum plate. Here are some pics to give you an idea what I did.

I am still working on all of the wiring, but so far I have all of the 20k, RB, and half of the 10k LED's wired. I set it up so that the 20K, RB, 10k, Satndard Blue, and RB moonlights will each be dimmable seperate from each other. The red and UV will be dimmed together since they are on the same buckpuck. This should give me unlimited control over the color mix and intensity of the light. Here are a few more pics of what I have so far.

Here is a drawing showing the layout of the LED's that I decided on. The section at one end with no LED's it the back of the fixture.

The chemipure in the first chamber will not get as much water passing through the bag than if you put it in the middle chamber. This is just my observation though. It very well might but i don't think it would.

Maybe you are right about them both fitting but I was thinking most reactors are kinda big and the Aquac isn't exactly small here is a pic of my setup. The black tube connected to PVC in chamber 2 comes from the refugium, the black tube from chamber 3 goes back to fuge and the clear one in chamber 3 comes from my ATO reservoir in the stand.

just bought a used solana 34. would it be okay to fill the entire tank with a vinegar and water solution and have the tank (with return pump, skimmer, heater, etc.) run for a while to clean the entire tank?

That's exactly what I did. You need very little vinegar. It will really smell though, so best to do it in a very well ventilated area.

I have to break mine down. I have a nasty red bubble algea that I haven't been able to shake. I am going to move the tank back home so I can give it more detailed care. I have tried all sorts of crabs with no luck, even reving individual rocks for scrubbing, all to no avail. I have been told that a hawiian yellow tang would take car of the problem, but I just can bring myself to putting a tang in a tank this small.

How much vinegar should i use? I thought of using 1:5 ratio of vinegar but that would mean I would need 6-7 gallons of vinegar if I wanted to fill the entire tank.

Very interesting setup. You did a great job with the screen top, nice and clean. I noticed that you didn't cover the very back corners on the side of the sump. I had three jumps into the 3rd chamber. A clown did it twice and my blue assessor did it once. All were rescued but it took a long time to extract that assessor. I've never read anyone else's post about this so I think my experience is rare.
