Solana tank owner thread.

Ok guys and gals, one more stand question if I may. Do you keep top off water on the bottom shelf? I have 5 gallons in a container and it feels plenty sturdy to hold it but thought I would ask.

Thanks

No problem at all. On my bottom shelf I have a 5.5 tank of topoff water, 1 gal kalk reactor and backup battery for my vortech.

Nice set up.. Where did you get the skimmer? I have had the worst last 2 months with my tank. Got new 150 Watt 14000K Ushio Bulb cause it was on sale at marine depot till I figure out what led to get. What a mistake this is the first 14k I had that looks yellow. So not happy. And the tunza skimmer is craping out. Hope everyone else's tanks are doing good

Have you tried the phoenix 14k bulb? IMO, simply the best single use hqi bulb I have ever used, I have also tried ushio in 14k and immediately disconnected. In my future should I be restricted to a single bulb over my reef, which is my current status, there is only 1 choice for me... :) GL

I got the skimmer used on RC for around $120. After trying 4 other skimmers im finally happy. I definitely recommend this skimmer to anyone.

I am running a pheonix 14k as well and am about to purchase a new one this week. I want to try a radium but i would have to get a new ballast and pendant for it to look right apparently. I am also going to add an all blue reefbrite strip
To my fixture if i can get a good deal

I'm looking into picking up a solana... Does anyone have a measurement of the groove in the back glass? (where it's cut out a bit for the the cords)
Thanks

What measurement are you looking for, the length of the cut, the height? Why are you asking? I don't think the cut is significant to tank function or positioning of equipment. I think it's purpose is for people who use the trim kit so cords can be over the tank back but under the trim.

I'm looking for both measurements actually. I'd like to remove the black plastic and use the groove as an overflow of sorts for a sump

Just sold my apartment so my 2-year-old Solana will be torn down. Our new place won't be ready for a few months so I'll be renting and tankless for about 6 months. Fish, clams, anemone, inverts and corals will be held by a friend who volunteered to establish a tank for me fed off of his very large system. Great friend! My Solana is overgrown and and I'm looking to establish a larger cube tank. I love the look of the Solana and hope to recreate some if it but with more room. I plan to use my Solana as a sea horse tank in the future. I may even get this going before I move forward with the larger system.

That could work really well as a coast to coast overflow! You would need to build an external overflow box but that's certainly doable and you could make it a bean animal overflow. I'll measure for you tonight and I would love to hear how it goes. I may do the same if you're successful.

Exactly what I was thinking. However, if the grove is very small, it wouldn't allow much flow. Also, an external overflow is more likely to leak. However I would have the overflow professionally built.

Wow. I thought it'd be much smaller than that.
Thanks for measuring
No problem, let us know what you come up with, this might start a revolution for us with solanas lol. If you buy used make sure you get the starfire version, as I don't think the old version has the indented back.

Has anyone seen the new style solana with no rear compartment at all? I can't find too much information about it but the tank looks nice

Just a quick question (I'm on page 8 of the thread so far but fast forwarded since I am having a problem).

I've had my system running for a few months now, and I bought it used so everything was established. Had it torn down and re setup within hours so not much NTS, if any. My problem is this: Even with the skimmer off I'm still getting a few micro bubbles coming from the loc lines. Even though I've checked the return pump, as well as it's connections to the loc lines, what could be causing these micro bubbles? All the plumbing is submerged, and I really hesitate to silicone the connections to correct this. Does anyone have any potential input? I had hoped it was just me re-angling the lines but it's been several weeks and I believe they would've slimed up by now.

I think the next step is a vinegar bath, then replacing the pump to loc line tubing before I go so far as siliconing the connections. What do you think?
