I'm probably in error on this... but even though they may be less efficient per watt as far as producing heat... wouldn't there still be less overall heat with this setup because the wattage itself is less? For instance if normally you run 2 x 250w MH and now you're only running say a 300w LED fixture... that'd be less heat overall right?
I wish these fixtures weren't thousands of dollars... I'd like to try them out =(

And completely not relevant, as these things put out MUCH more heat per watt than MHs....

***???? I have a Solaris system and it puts out VERY minimal heat. My old MH's were house heaters compared to the Solaris. You can cook an egg under MH's. I assume you actually have a Solaris to make that claim??!! Not sure where you get your info, but it's dead wrong.
I love this light, and I'm not trying to justify the money. I'm very pleased with it.....

In dealing with these lights, you can't think in terms of PAR. It's not the PAR that makes the corals so happy under the Solaris, it's the blue spectrum.

Villous, this is simple science.
The LEDs the solaris uses are in the range of 10% efficient. MH bulbs are in the range of 50% efficient.
That means, LEDs waste 90% of the electricity they use as heat. MHs waste 50% as heat.
If you dont believe me, go look at the specifications for the LEDs the solaris uses. Theyre on Lumileds.com.
Your solaris doesnt feel hot because its only 75w, and its spread out over a large area. A metal halide bulb is 250w, and very small.
You solaris people sound like religious zealots: "GO AWAY SCIENCE, YOU'RE NOT REAL!"

And on that I'm done. Cognitive dissonance rears its ugly head. If you can't justify your purchase, you'll invent new scientific principles to back it up.
If you want a real LED fixture that is actually efficient, buy an Aquaillumination that uses the Seoul Semiconductor LEDS at 100 lumens per watt. The solaris is less efficient than running PCs.

I've got it!!! RichConley must own stock or work for Aquaillumination! Ok, I'll bite. The Solaris may be "less efficient" than MH, but it sure produces a h*ll of a lot less heat than the MH's do...... :

Of course it does. Its a 75w unit as opposed to 500w of MH.
The problem is, a 75w Solaris produces less light, and more heat than a 70w MH.

Narrow minded? No, I'm just not an idiot who believes everything a company selling him a $2k piece of junk tells him.

No, your one of those "know it all, jealous, my way or no way" idiots. Actually, I have another word instead of idiot, but I wont go there. Don't be bitter RichConley......don't be bitter. Maybe you used to be an engineer for PFO and they fired you for sleeping on the job. Maybe your ex-wife works there.......who knows??? But don't be bitter
And to quote Mr Gump....."That's all I got to say about that...."
Have a great day!!!! Happy 4th

MH you have 1 single bulb, LED you have many, it's really a different comparison you don't seem to grasp that Rich
I don't care that 1 single LED bulb isn't as energy efficient as a huge 500w MH

MH you have 1 single bulb, LED you have many, it's really a different comparison you don't seem to grasp that. Clearly bitter to call the solaris a peice of junk as if it is useless. It just MAY be the model light for the future of reef keeping. But you'll still be defending your metal halides because it looks good on paper.
