So in the process of getting my house closed on. Finished a flawless inspection today.

My inspector suggested some solar tubes in the bath room above the showers. I was like yes.. we need solar tubes!

This thread is more about what can they do for my tank? They are really not much $$, 30% tax discount for buying them. Install looks to be a breeze.

why not put one over my tank.?

was going to use the skylight.. but solatubes might get me some better direct light.

Of course i will have extra lighting!

So lets hear your thoughts on solar tubes.

There are other threads on this, one build thread in particular comes to mind but I searched and cannot find it.

Seems like a good idea, but not very effective at our position on the earth.

We have 2 - 1 in the kitchen, 1 in the family room. While they do brighten up the rooms they're not a huge source of light. For a tank you'd have to run them without the diffuser meaning you have to find another way of finishing them off. Be sure you have a good seal between the ceiling & the plexiglass plate that the diffuser attaches to. If not you'll have a ton of condensation from the warm moist house air hitting the top dome in colder months.

very, very interesting...not sure i'd want those huge tubes exposed inside the house...and here in New York...you would DEFINITELY need additional lighting...

I think they are pretty cool, but kind of pricey. I think they're at least a couple hundred dollars. In a place like LA, you'd get nice, consistent strong light, but in upstate, NY? not so much. So, you'd still buy metal halides or T5s.

The extension kits do make nice lumenarc knockoffs, though.... ;)
