Ok well I went to this imax movie of the ocean and a part of it was about mantis shrimps. Well it said that their claws strike so fast it has the same power as a .22 caliber bullet. I just thought it was some info that I should share:D

ya thats a cool fact. i dont even know how an imal can pack a punch like that. it kinda builds up a bad rep though, only the largest ones can do that. but awesome none the less!

I used the 22 cal (short) analogy in a 1976 Scientific American article. I was comparing the slug at muzzle velocity to the strike of a large Hemisquilla. Unfortunately, that reference has been repeated many times often applied to small stomatopods that do not pack nearly that much power. Recently, Sheila Patek and I have published data for the strike of O. scyllarus that shows that the original figure was not that far off.

How big does the California Mantis shrimp that was in that movie get? I think it said that one was 10 inches or so, but I don't believe the movie mentioned how big they can get.
