Hi Sonny,

I'm getting married in Hawaii in September and will be gone for 2 weeks. I'm currently dosing Vodka/MB7 and was wondering if it's safe to stop cold turkey while I'm gone. I was thinking of running GFO during those 2 weeks and slow ramp up the Vodka/MB7 once I get back.

Thanks for your input.

Congrats on the upcoming wedding. :D

Running GFO would be a good idea while you are gone. After running a MB7/vodka for so long a system will have a hard time coping when stop cold turkey.

Ramp up the dosing slowly when you get back and you should be good to go.

Have fun, and enjoy the sun for the rest of us stuck here on the mainland.

Thanks for the warm wishes. It'll be my first time to Maui so I'm quite excited...and of course there's the wedding

Sunny, I picke up some kent marine lugos solution and added 3 drops to my sump - total water volume 90g - and about an hour later my skimmer cup overflowed and continued producing a very wet skimmate for the next 12 hours. Do you think it was an overdose? or is it normal for the Lugos to make a skimmer act up?

Thanks
Mike

I have never heard of Lugols causing your skimmer to go crazy. Next time you dose only do one drop. Try splitting up your dosages.

Sonny,
I did what you suggested. I raised my dosage of MB7 to 12 drops/day. (per directions on the bottle) Been doing this for almost a week now, how long before the red cyano kills itself off?
Cleaned out the sump also. (no cheato or live rock/sand)
thanks

You need to siphon the cyano out. Even with the MB7, it's not going to completely go away on it's own. I would do a small water change and use that opportunity to siphon the rocks and substrate free of the cyano.

Is there freshwater bacteria that survives as saltwater bacteria? I only ask this because MB7 is advertised for fresh & salt water.

Keep on dosing the MB7. After another week I suggest that you look into dosing vodka. This will help clean out your tank once and for all. After a month of dosing MB7/vodka your nutrient levels should start to drop and the red cyano should disappear.

Stick with it and in no time your tank will be clean again. :D

Sonny-

Is dosing the MB7 the same as adding sugar/vinegar to the vodka?

Thanks,

Scott

Hello, MB7 is bacteria while Vodka/sugar is a carbon source. Using both MB7 and a carbon source will aid in removing the waste from your system more efficantly.

I used to use vodka alone but ran into issue with red cyano. I decided to use MB7 in order to compete with the harmful bacteria. Since starting up MB7 with vodka I no longer have issues with cyano or other harmful bacteria.

Honestly, I dont know much about the makeup or biology of bacteria. Bacteria was one of the first forms of life on earth so I dont see why it couldn't thrive in both salt and fresh water.

Perhaps an expert could chime in. I found a bunch of info on Google just dont have the time right now to read through it all:

It is normal for this to happen when you have excess nutrients and are just beginning to dose any type of iodine... Once you get the nutrients in your system down, this will subside... As Sonny suggested, drop back to 1 drop per day and increase to 2 per day after a week, and 3 after the next week... You will eventually not have any skimmer overflow problems when dosing...

Wow Sunny ! Like always over the years you always inspire. Looks amazing !

Look what the cat dragged in! :p

Hey man, how have you been! Glad to see you back on here!

Have you setup any new tanks lately or are you still on an extended vacation? ;)

 Still taking it easy with a small tank and spending lots of time with my growing daughters .

My next setup will be clean , simple and peaceful. No crowds lots of open room for about a half a dozen or so frags to grow into proper colonies. However real planning for it is a few years off ...Maybe ;)
