I have the same issue.......have you had any luck getting rid of it?

It's driving me nuts....lights off it's gone..early on when the lights are one not noticeable but toward the end it's all over the rocks...

So I'm stopping MB7...hopefully it gets better

Sonny: Tank looks great as always!

Look at your RO water, silica is one of the first thing that gets through your RO/DI.

Diatoms: I had this issue for many months (tank is 9 months old; had diatoms entire time). I changed bulbs recently and went from the Giesemann Megachrome 13,000K to an Elos Spectra 20,000K and the diatoms disappeared. Admittedly, other changes occurred around this time: changed all filters in R/O unit, fed less, removed one wrasse. Just some thoughts.

I must parrot everyone in saying your efforts are spectacular. Bravo to you for sharing your path to success.

I have a question and it pertains to the height of your rockscape. Looking at some of the early pictures best I can judge is the top of your islands are approximately 1/3 up the height of the tank. Is that an accurate guess? Did you find at that height with your lights that you had to be selective at all in what specimens you built your display with?

Maybe better put, could you place just about any high par requirement coral at that height and expect it to flourish?

Sonny, do you know where I can purchase dowflake online for Recipe # 1, Part 1: The Calcium Part? I live in AZ (no snow) and I called Homedepot but no luck.

on your pic of your sump a while back I didn't see a float valve or ATO floats.. do you top off manually or do you run a ATO?..

Hello, top off is added manually by turning on and off my RO/DI unit.

I switched from a Red Sea (POS!) to an Ozotech Poseidon 200mg/hr. What's nice about them are that they are very well made and you do not have to run an air dryer with the Ozotech and it runs beautifully. Just switch your air valve on your skimmer to a 1/4 inch john guest fitting. connect that to a Lees 1/4" Tee that can be found at Petland and connect that to the output line of your ozonizer. The open end will allow your skimmer to suck in O3 and fresh air unrestricted. Your Deltec will hold up fine at 50+ mg/hr, that original air valve will not. The JG will do the trick for you along with the tee and some ozone safe tubing. I run a small air pump connected to the inlet of the ozonizer to get the 03 to the Tee, where it is sucked into the skimmer. Just allow your skimmer output to flow over some GAC and place a GAC pad or sack of GAC over your skimmer cup and you are now environment safe. You will be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Very cool. I went over to my friends house and he actually runs the same unit. He swears by ozone and his aquarium is one of the best looking systems I have seen.

I have a 36" long oceanic tank with a 6 bulbs powermodule and I feel like changing to MH but everytime I see this thread I feel like keeping the PM. I always had big tank with MH and feel like the growth and color is better but lately my frags are starting to take off.

Really nice tank and pics sunny.

Lighting is ultimately going to come down to your own personal preferences. MH's are great, but I cant live with the added heat and electricity.

Hey Sonny I was wondering what do you use to feed your coral?.....thanks
Also I remember u said u used Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure to dip corals before u put them into ure tank...is that dip for just hard corals?...or for all?hard and soft?

I dose Brightwell AA's once in a while. I feed my acans, Dendro's, and favia's Spectrum Brand Pellets.

I use the pro coral cure and pretty much all new corals, including some LPS.

And I remember u running a reactor...what kinda media are u running in there?....lol..sorry dude if i ask too many questions...just tryin to learn from all u master reefers out there

Hello, I am using a Phosban 150 reactor which currently has Bulk Reef Supply High Capacity GFO.

you have some amazing clams!

Thanks!

Hello and thank you. :D

Yes, 1/3 is the correct ratio. I feel that the 1/3 ratio is pleasing to the eye and provides ample space for flow and growth. Concerning coral growth, I have clams and SPS on or inches above the sandbed with good growth. But, keep in mind that my tank is only 20" high.

Hi Sunny

I am just setting up my rimless tank now and was wondering what height your water is below the top of the glass.

Also i am fiddling with the return valve and adjusting the water height in the weir, can you tell me at what height you run your water level in the weir, does the water flow over and down, or is it the same level in the weir as the tank.

Many thanks

Mike

I went to 2 lfs and they both told me T5's are not enough for me to keep SPS..they said i need halides for that..so now iam confused?...grrrrr..and then I told them that no Ive seen results online...and there like..nooooo..theyre tricking you with fake pics...theres no way u cant do that....lmao:lolspin:

Hello Sonny,
I know that you get a lot of this but thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with the reefkeeping community. You have shown much patience by constantly answering the same questions...i just read this whole thread. Your tank is awesome and inspiring. This thread is the reason I joined RC.

Here is some background info on me and my tank: I have maintained fw tanks for most of my life. When my girlfriend and I moved into our 700 sqft condo last May, before we had furniture I was filling up my 55 gal. This didnt fly with her so she went out and got me a 26 bowfront. I decided to try nano-reefing as it has become so popular and "easy" due to technological advances.
Equipment:
26gal bowfront (24''Wx18''Hx15''deep at the widest point of the bow)
Octopus BH-1000 hob skimmer (rated for up to 90gal)
2x Current Nova Extreme 24'' 2x24w t5 (stock bulbs)
hydor koralia nano and hydor 1
sicce voyager 1 (607 gph) (total flow from powerheads= ~50x tank volume per hour)

Livestock:
~20-30 lbs high grade caribbean and fiji LR
~20 lbs Live sand substrate (about 1-1.5 in deep)
1 green mandarin
1 yellow headed prawn goby
1 pistol shrimp
1 peppermint shrimp
~8 assorted small hermits
~7 turbo snails
3 nassarius snails
tons of brittle stars, copepods, amphipods, bristleworms, non photo-synthetic clams

assorted zoanthids
orange and purple montipora digitata (branching)
orange plating montipora
2 acropora frags, unidentified
1 birdsnest frag
1 pink pocillopora
duncan
candy cane
spiny cup pectina
pink and high green frogspawn
rose coral
orange and teal acan
xenia and leather (will be gone in a week or two)
tridacna maxima
coco worm

I have recently decided to go sps/acan/zoas. Lets just say i finally found a source of head stash corals here in SC, and am now obsessed/addicted to sps! my tank has been up and running for around 9 months now. My mandarin is fat and happy and i have not really had any losses. i have just gotten most of my sps but have polyp extension and all that good stuff except in one acro. My tank usually runs with low nitrates, and phosphate= <.25 with kh=~9. I do weekly water changes and add calc 1.5 times a week and strontium and iod and reef fuel whenever it "feels right." I also dose zooplankton and phyto. water changes are either weekly or bi-weekly. i had to leave my system for a month around the holidays with only a friend topping off the tank twice and had no losses. My liverock is seriously "alive" and has tons of cucumbers and other critters in it. My tank has a bunch of coralline as well.
I started dosing 1 capful MB7 two days ago. i figured some good bacteria couldnt hurt. Now for the questions: Do you think a tank such as mine will benefit from your method of mb7 and vodka? i would like to take things very slow so i was going to only do 1 capful a day for the first week then cut back. what do you think about this? what type of regimen should i do with this and the vodka on such a small system? Is there going to be a huge amount of die-off in my tank? with my current t5 fixtures i plan on getting new bulbs (within a month) and was planning on:
front
blue+
fiji purp
blue +
aquablue special
What do you think about this? will it be sufficient for growing sps? will copepods die off and cause my mandarin to starve? and lastly, are the microbubbles from my hob skimmer a problem?
Thanks again for your time spent answering our questions, as well as sharing with us your rimless reef!
peace

Hello, the height of the water is about 3" from the rim of the tank. The water in the overflow is about 3-4" high. I have a low flow return pump so I dont have a massive turnover of water.

Hi,

I see your running GFO again. whats happening with vodka MB7 at the moment? Does the GFO and MB7 do ok together?

thanks

They probably wouldnt bother cause #1 They think they know it all and....... #2 They just work there so they're doin thier job....lol

Sunny.. Thanks for your sharing your experience with the rockscape and light..

I saw something you mentioned early on in your thread about being careful not to import any algae with new additions etc.. I this just physical removal with a toothbrush on frag plugs or more involved?

Thx..
Chuck

That would probably be the last time I would go into that shop. :)
