Sonny's Rimless Shallow Reef.

I would go with 36 and 3/4 inch glass.
My current 150 G is 70x22x24 had to be taken down two floors down and 3 floors up carried on the stairs. As there was limited manouvring place on stair turns they had to rotate it each time by holding it side down so it was very high and wobling above the 4 people lifting it...
Are you sure about only 20 high? I know you're into shallow tanks but with that length wouldn't it be too shallow?

Hey Sonny,

Take a look at my thread on how they braced my tank from the inside. That may actually work well for you without having to go too thick.. There's a picture of the inside corner bracing on the last couple of pages on the thread.

Awesome! I will check it out; Thanks!

Who are you ordering from?

Miracles, of course. :p This will be my third one from them. :D

Wow, looks like you had a much harder time then I will.I have been in those apartments in Beirut and there is very little room to move around in. I may go 22" high.

That doesn't make sense. How would it be too shallow if the tank is longer? The height of the tank is still 20".

I think that it is like an optical illusion. With the tank being longer the shallowness of the tank will be more pronounced. Kinda like wearing stripes with a certain direction can make one look skinny or fat.

Easy on the fat jokes. :lmao: Thanks for the explanation.

I couldn't decide between 20" or 22" either. then I realised there is another option, 21" :lmao: went with that:thumbsup:

I'd do the 3/4 glass too. or eurobrace. I couldn't afford the 3/4 starphire in australia so euroed 3 sides.

i'm looking forward to the new tank

Hi Sonny, exciting times ahead.

My thoughts on size and glass thickness...

Any height between 20"-22" would be fine. Since the length will be 72", I would definitely go with 3/4". I carefully monitor mine and it's 66" x 22".

Either depth option is great (30" or 36"). I find it difficult reaching into the middle section at the back and mine is only 26" deep. That's standing on a stool and I am tall too.

I didn't get any bracing inside my tank at the base but would strongly recommend it with either the 30" or 36" options.

Oh, with 3/4" glass and any bracing... it is going to be very very heavy plus remember the width of your doorways and hallways!

Some rough figures with 3/4" glass, no bracing, empty tank...

72"x30"x20" ~523lbs
72"x30"x22" ~558lbs
72"x36"x20" ~580lbs
72"x36"x22" ~615lbs

Well, here is what I am thinking for the next build:
Untitled-2.jpg

It is basically a scaled up version of my last Rimless tank. There is nothing fancy about it. A 1" return, and a 1.5" drain, corner overflow, and Starphire Front. Thats it. :p Sounds boring, eh?

But, the inside will be full of some of the most beautiful corals and fish you have ever seen. Especially now with my new found access to pretty much every coral and fish in the world! :D :D

just consider with the 36" how hard it may be to clean the rear glass.
also what about starfire sides, normal glass will look pretty green in 3/4 and may ruin the starfire look on the corners with the greeness.

You left out one piece of vital info.
Lighting?

Ha ha ha.

That my friend, is currently in the works. It is likely going to be a Hybrid of the the available technologies today. (MH,T5,LED) ;)

It wont be anything too fancy or expensive, but it will get the job done. If you have followed my builds in the past you will know that I try and build them as simple and low tech as possible.

That's not what I was expecting at all. Didn't think you would stray from the all T5 thing. Cant wait to see you go a little different route. Are you gonna continue this tread or start a new one?

Well, I love 100% T5's. Nothing is set in stone so I may go 100% T5. I just dont know if I want to spend the extra cash on a large ATI Powermodale when I have all I would need to light the new tank here already.

We will see, it is still too soon to say what lighting I will be using.

Just a question Sonny, why the corner overflow? wouldnt you save space by getting it external?

I dont know, I dont want any complications and am afraid to try something different I guess. I was happy with the old setup and the corner overflow didn't bother me.

But you got me thinking and I just email Miracles to ask them about it. :p So, Perhaps I will be going with an external.

OK, new Rimless tank has been ordered! Miracles 72x36x22 Rimless, 3/4" glass, starphire front. Now, time to get started on the stand. I just called up Miracles to see what options I had with an external overflow. Looking at doing a coast to coast external overflow.
