Soon to be proud owner of.....

SOO....the skimmer came. its a beast! so much so that it didn't fit between the stand and the top of the sump...bummer.

So i emptied the sump undid the plumbing and changed over to a lower sump i had lying around. It fit perfect! only problem was that it was releasing stray voltage now. :( I emailed Tom from So Cal tropical, the place of purchase, and he said that he would send me one ASAP.

sweet! only i had just taken everything apart just to accommodate this thing...so after some brain storming i came up with the genius plan! I created a band aid! Using 2 old plugs i made a copper free ground cable so now no shock! (I i had different people put there hand in the sump to confirm it was good, wasnt sure if my hand were just numb LOL.)

so after that whole ordeal i finally started my return pumps the system is back up and running! the skimmer took about 15 min before it started to pull crap however its still in the break in so it will start to produce better skimmate in the future!

There only one problem with what you did is if somthing in the tank like 110v gets exsposed in water and you stick your had in the tank you just completed a circuit . You wont get a shock but you will be electrocuted and the voltage wont let go .
Thats the problem with making ground probes.

hmm...no hands in the tank then. I have everything plugged to a surge protector so wouldnt it trip if that were to happen? The original stray current was just a small tingle kinda like a 9V battery.

Surge no GFI yes just be careful or get a gfi socket then no worries

UPDATE!

This thing is working! Took me a bit to find its sweet spot but it chugging away now!

Sweet upgrade Dave.
Ever since Deltec introduced these underbody pump/space saver style skimmers, they've really taken off and seem to be manufactered by most good quality skimmer companies now.
Btw, skimmate looks good and I'll catch up with tomorrow.

Any info on real life power consuption of the pump? I'm thinking of picking up a BM220ex. It comes with the atman ph4000. Some sites say 25watts and some say 40watts. You ever plug yours into a kilowatt and check it out?

Not sure but its says 25w on the BM website but that is for 220v, im not sure how that relates to 110v. HTH

Thanks for the response. I know my atman 2500 pulls 28watts on my nac6. So I'm thinking the 4000 will pull more. Oh well. Thanks again.

I am very happy with this thing so far, the skimmate is looking better every week this thing gets older! Its been running for about a month.
