John - Random question on something I had noticed previously on your big FOWLR tank... is there any rhyme or reason why you have two Moorish Idols in one section, and a lone Moorish Idol in the other?

I use many methods to mix my fish, including a long QT where I get my fish feeding well, fat, healthy, and adapted. I then sometimes transition the fish into a display, allowing the new fish to see the existing fish without them allowing to touch.

Despite any method I've tried though, I've come to the conclusion that you just cannot keep two moorish idols together long term. I've spoken to many experienced aquarists about the same, including friend Kevin Kohen, and I get the same. I still have the separator in the tank with one on each side, but when I get rid of that down the line I'll have to get rid of one idol. It's a shame, because they are thriving.

Copps: Do you use a UV sterilizer on your Large FOWLR tank? IF so what do you use?

I do... it's the Turbo Twist 36 watt model, but I will soon upgrade. After my trip to Japan, they run industrial strength UVs there that aren't even from the aquarium trade.

got the kid on skates yet?

Of course! He's three and a half and already has been on the ice for a year... us Coppolino are on the small side, especially when it comes to hockey, and so we need skating skills. I started on the ice at 2 and started Tier 1 hockey in upstate NY from age 6 and went on to Junior hockey. I still play each week. I'm already having a blast with him... check him out on his little Bauer Vapors... the smallest size they had and they were big on him... :)

Hey John, are you coming?

Would like to go to IMAC-West, depends on my wife's Dog show plans. I still have a car in San Jose that I need to pick up (or sell) and drive back to MI. That would work.

What is the reason for this? I have one that is doing quite well in a 65g quarantine tank and I really wanted to do 4 of them in a 120x48x30 tank. This could put an end to those plans. I thought they were schooling fish in the wild

Hey copper, just dont let him become a fan of your loser rangers!!!

Hmm... they won today, and have won three in a row... and they are well ahead of Buffalo... :)

Oh, and the Caps are amazing to watch... they've grown on me with my ~14 years in the DC area...

While I've done plenty in this hobby, including things people generally say cannot be done, and generally say "Never say never", this is one instance where I am close to saying never... I'd scratch those plans if I were you... as juveniles they may get along as mine did, but power battles will ensue... and these power battles will last until one is done... they roll like a football in a spiral when they fight! :D

My Sabres are late bloomers. They wait until the last minute to actually soil the bed and fail miserably.

And stop trying to dazzle me with the stats. I just hate Avery more than aiptasia.

My butterfly has gorwn ridiculously. Eats out my hand now (if you call near porpoising out of the water to get the food, "eating out of my hand":D ). Has lost the black almost completely and looks just like a tinkers now. Not that I care, though. I know what she is/was.

Do you not think they could be the same sex? I mean this could be a reason for the fighting.

No... a good friend in the business I respect very much once tried about two dozen in a multiple thousand gallon tank... same result...

Three... but as I said above... doesn't really matter the number...

Any of you know how to sex a MI? Its easy on the big ones.
(this is a MI IQ test)
Jack Randall figured it out and published it in 1955.

..........Ich is very easy to treat for in QT with cupramine or other copper products. I only take my fish out of QT not only when they're disease free, but when they're fully adapted with their fat reserves restored... this benefits fish like this tremendously, as they are much more resistant to ich when they are settled in and fat and happy... putting the fish to marinate in this copper treated water in its weakened state allows it to adapt without the threat of ich. By adding the fish after that to the stressful environment that is our reef tanks results in a much higher success rate... with some fish I even place them in a transition tank hooked up to my large system... this introduces them to the water environment of my reef system without the stress of the "herd" in the display... if they take on something from there they go back into QT...

This is not the "easy way"... many people have the attitude that they'll just keep trying until one lives... which is unfortunate... we all have killed fish, but we have the moral obligation to learn from our mistakes and correct accordingly... I have a collection of rare tangs... some one of a kind... that I will share later this week... and again using the methods above you have the MOST control over the life of the fish... the "tang police" jump on so many people for keeping tangs in small tanks, when there are thousands of tangs that die as a result of this for every one that will outgrow a system...

John

I couldn't help but give this thread a bump, and a bump probably with the most insightful paragraph, after I found time to surf around a bit (when my daughter finally wore herself out with Dora videos and cheerios, that is).

I think you, Copps, could write a book on nothing but the QTing process. In the past I haven't been too diligent in QTing new arrivals, and really only started about four years ago. But as my QTing ability, and my ablility (space requirements really) to produce enough water to control ammonia has risen, I've found a lot of what plauged new arrivals simply went away. I will never go without this process before introduction. It's a tremendous "headache buster" knowing that the fish you introduce is almost (sometimes more) healthy as he was the day he was caught.........good stuff, dude. Keep it up.
