Southdown Alternative @ HD - Pulverized Limestone

FWIW, I've been using this stuff for years, the first tank I set up with it was probably in 2003 (ish, I think?) so I can attest to the longevity of it. I'm in WI, and the HD here has it called something like "limestone screening pavers base". I used a screen to pull the bigger chunks out, and ended up with a really fine sand, but I like that in a sand bed. Worms galore. The only thing I've noticed is that some batches appear to be more grey, and some more white. So I always got the bags that were more white.

I was debating about setting up my next tank with this stuff or doing it the "right way" which is kind of how I stumbled on this thread. But I'm happy with it, so I'm leaning towards using it again.

So, now that some of you have been using this long term, how would you rate it? Any algae problems, or parameter issues?

Havent used it in a display tank, but I do know you have to wash the heck out of it, cause its really dusty

Yeah, thats what I've heard too.

have you used it in a fuge?

There is a guy here in our club that has it as a deep sand bed fuge, but not long term. Maybe he can chime in here

I have only checked 1 Home Depot in the Kansas City area, and they didn't have it. But from what people are saying, if they can find it its outside in the Lawn & Garden section.
