Spawning Haddoni

First a little (( okay maybe a lot )) of background.

I have had this (( blue )) Haddoni for about 3 years now. It is currently in my 58 with a green one. It is hosting my mated pair of pink skunks. I normally do weekly 5 gallon water changes.

On March 2nd I had back surgery, and haven't done a WC since the 1st. Last Saturday (( 14th )) I had to go back into the hospital for another surgery (( leaking spinal fluid )), which was very unplanned. I was released on Thursday (( 19th )). Sometime while I was in there the main pump failed. Not sure if it failed because of old age, or it ran dry. I wasn't as clear as I thought about topping off to my Dad (( knows nothing about fish, but since this was so sudden, he was the only one with a key to my place )). The temp had dropped to 71*, and the salinity jumped to 1.032. I lost my pair of Potter's angels, but everything else seems to be pretty good.

Anyways, got the new pump hooked up this afternoon. and been slowly bringing the salinity down (( temp was back to normal last night )). I just woke up for a pain killer induced nap and looked over at the tank. It was all cloudy -- started to think, what now!?!?!?!. Turns out that the blue Haddoni is spawning. It has been doing that for at least 40 minutes now. It appears that this Haddoni is a male. The green one isn't doing a thing. The Haddoni didn't look all that bad after the pump incident, and looked pretty good after the pump was hooked up.

I do have a slight fear that this is a last grasp at life event, but I am hoping that all the recent changes were just a trigger for it to spawn. I have some pictures, but still need to upload them. They aren't going to be the best --- cloudy tank and shaking hands.

Thanks, it was scary. Was darn near passing out from the pain of the headache.


Still have a bunch of pictures to go through --- sure they are better, but here are the first 3. It looks like it has finally stopped spawning. The skimmer is going nuts.

Todd,

You've had that anemone too long for it to be a "last gasp". Stress induced maybe, but I'm very doubtful you'll have any long term issues.

Did you get a chance to look at the spawn under a microscope? If not, what makes you think it's a male?

Thanks Gary. But, can't do a whole lot for a couple of weeks. Can't lift anything, and legs get really weak if I stand too long.

So far everything in the tanks looks ok, still really cloudy, but nothing looks like it is stressing out.

I am really hoping no long term issues, but the death of my Potter's pair from this is what has me a bit concerned.

I don't have a microscrope, but I am thinking that it is male from the way the discharge looks. I could be very wrong, but it just looks too milky to be from a female. Granted I am going from when SPS spawn to judge that.

Hope you have some reefer friends who can give you a hand changing water. Good luck.
You may want to call some maintenance people to change water for you over the next few days if you have no one to do it for you as a friend.

Thanks, I hope it gets better too -- this was my 4th back surgery in less then a year.

My father is going to stop by and help with water changes, and there are a lot of local reefers that have offered to help too --- thank god, since I have 3 tanks.

And at worse I have some non reefer friends that would help too, but since I am suppose to spend most of my time laying down, they would be a last resort.

Take the reefers up on those water changes Todd. No need to stress anything if you don't have to.

Was there absolutely no reaction from the green carpet? It didn't extend or widen it's mouth or anything? I only ask because in some species, when the male spawns the female will distort their mouth to capture sperm.

I would still keep an eye on the green one for a while. It would be sooooo cool if you had successful reproduction. It's been done in other species, so it's not completely out of the realm of possibility.

Oh, don't you worry, I am going to do that. I never want to go through this pain again, so I am going to take any offers for help that I can get. Heck, just standing up right now hurts, I couldn't even imagine trying to do any work on the tank(s)

I don't want to say there was absolutely no reaction, but I was actually looking for the green one to start spawning too. But, now that you mention that some species will take it in, the mouth did look a little different at times --- a few times it looked more of a slit then it normally does. But, I will admit I was mainly paying attention to the blue one.

I will for sure keep an eye on the green one to see if I notice anything different about it. That is part of the reason I have kept it in this tank --- the pink skunks ignore it, so was hoping that some day something like this would happen. Just didn't like the timing of it.

Today everything look fairly normal. The blue one isn't as open as it normally is, but still open. That could be because of the spawning, or because the lack of water changes recently. (( and I am still bring the salinity back down -- going really slow with it )).

thats a pretty sweet tank, even with the cloudiness. i hope you dont have to have any more surgeries either, and you can spend your hospital bills on fish instead!

Still need to upload some of the other pictures, but everything is looking pretty good right now.

The folks were over yesterday and my dad helped me do a water change on that tank. And dang did it stink.

Glad to hear your looking better, I had a similar issue a couple months ago after adding my sump my haddoni blew up very odd ect and started going nuts it looked just like yours. I ran tons of carbon and did WC's too.

Im sorry to hear about you angles but at least that is as far as it went. Mine also opened up after the event but did not look normal for a couple days.
