Speedway "Warning"

This is a Warning to anyone that uses there debit/credit card at all Speedway and Super America stations that they are now authorizing your card at the pump $50 for visa and $75 for Mastercard plus what ever the fuel purchase is, we bought $6 tonight with the visa got home and checked our transactions from shoping what not today to get our account balance and found our gas was $56 we called the bank in shock to find out they just started this policy (Speedway) and it will take 4 Buisness days for the right amount to appear on your online statements, This is BS as we and many others are on tight Budgets and this $50 hurts bad and to boot I have called 5 different Speedways and none are answering there phones

This is far more common than you think...many gas stations do this, it's not just Speedway. Many are based on what the franchaise owner chooses to do. Do a Google search on "$50 gas station authorization".

Basically, the reasoning is because when you swipe your card at the beginning of the transaction, they don't know how much gas you are going to buy, so they put the hold on for $50. After the sale is over, they send a second transaction for the actual amount, but as you see, the two take a few days to clear each other.

One solution is to not pay at the pump (where possible). Pump your gas, take your debit card in the store and pay when the transaction is complete. They'll debit the exact amount at that point.

While it is common to have a hold on your account, I have never had more than a $5 hold. The $50 hold fee is an exorbitant amount of money.

Thanks for the heads up!

Many stations actually upped that $50 amount when gas prices were up through the roof.

they use to do it for a $1 then charge the right amount but as of late they have been getting screwed by people with $2 in there account filling up for $50 thats why some of the stations changed what they do

I can understand that, but they should post at the pump something saying we are going to authorize your account $ what ever and hours later we still can't get any speedway to answer there phones

I guess I am good to go. My rig never takes less than 65.00 at the pump. I guess someone has to keep the economy moving :)

Thanks for the heads up.. I'll pass that info on.

Some stations always authorize for $75. That's why sometimes it will say "see cashier" if you have less than $75 available and you just want to pump $20. When I know it is close I go in and "prepay" for $20 then you don't have to worry about pumping your gas and the card not going through afterwards. Most places won't take a check anymore and it would be hard to remedy the situation if you pump the gas first and then your card is still declined for some reason.

Actually I had more problem with stations that for a while put a $50 limit on how much you could pump. The pump would stop at $50, and then you you got in your car thinking to leave with a full tank, and the gauge would show you still were short. BTW, I don't think this is a true story about Speedway. Maybe it got garbled from the pumping max situation, along with the name of the stations involved. I get gas at Speedway pretty often, and never ran into this happening there.

This is a true story and it happened to us yesterday and there is no way to hit $50 filling our Dodge Neon

Heh...now how about the guy filling up his Hummer? :)

$75 is the normal limit anymore. A guy I work with has a 2500HD Silverado and a bass boat. He hits the $75 limit twice on some stops.
