Splendid Dottyback should I or should I not?

I was wondering if anyone has any experince with a splendid dottyback or dottybacks in general. If you read my forum "my 55g dam" than you would know that I have a 55g tank w/overflow, sump, skimmer, t5, the whole thing. In the tank I have 40+lbs of LR, polyps, xenia, star polyps, and 2 clown fishes. I also will be adding an blue spotted jawfish.

Q:Would they harass my peoples?

I've never known dottybacks to be 'aggressive' but I've not had long term success with them either. The longest I've had a dottyback was 9 months so I don't go there anymore.

I had a nice orchid that was added last. Peaceful and beautiful fish in my tank, but from what I have read, not everyone is so lucky. I could not add peppermint shrimp though.

I read that some ppl have bad luck with dottybacks. But the 9Mnth of life.....I dont think so.

IME they are quite hardy, but aside from the orchid, which has a softer reputation, they will pick on any newcomers, often to the point of death. Put them in last. They will also pretty much eat anything that sticks its nose out (pods, worms etc.) I had no idea that my snails were getting harassed until I got rid of my neon DB and they started coming out in the daytime again. Apparently he liked to pick at their antennae for fun.

I have a strawberry dottyback and a neon dottyback. The neon was added last to my tank and litterally ripped apart my 1yr old gramma. He also eats snails/peppermint shrimp. I recently ended up in my overflow and I removed him from the system due to his aggressive nature.

i dont like them because they get territorial and become a pain .yes if he gets terratorial he will harass tankmates for sure

I had a Springer's Dottyback for about a year & a half until I lost him to septasemia (sp).

His only tank mates had been a Lawnmower Blenny & a Chromis. The Dottyback & Chromis would chase each other on occasion, but that lasted maybe a few seconds at a time.

I have read that the neons are more aggressive than other Dottybacks.

He never bothered any of my shrimp, snails, brittle star, ect but he would catch ghost shrimp if I added them to the tank. It was funny because it's mouth is so small & the ghost was probably about 1/4 it's size.

spledid dottybacks will EAT shrimp and is a fairly large dottyback. Not known to be the most aggressive dottyback but I certainly would be hesitant to put one in with ocellaris, percula clowns or skunk clowns (tomato, maroon, cinnamon more of the right temperament and capabilities) or easily spooked jawfish.

I have 2, one chromis dottyback and a sunrise. When they were both introduced at the same time, they were biting eachothers jaws and were just attached for around an hour. The sunrise is much worse than the chromis which has mellowed out for the most part. The Sunrise has established its "turf" all throughout the rockwork and never comes out unless its trying to harass another fish, or to quickly grab a pellet and hid again. We call it the demon fish.

One more thing, both of them hate nassarius snails with a passion. Thats the only time the Sunrise stays out of the rockwork is when theres a nassarius on the glass; then they join forces against it and try to kill it

i had a Elegant Pseudochromis and a strawberry goby, aggressive but cool, i would say you need a big tank for them for territory reasons and only get 1 or a pair because they hate each other. they will also go for your snails and shrimp.

I have a neon pseudochromis that I have had 5+ years in 125 gal tank with mainly large tangs, it seems to stay in the live rock most of the time so doesn't come out much. It does seem to show aggression to my six line wrasse but no contact is made and it seems like they are playing vs fighting. When I had a pigmy angel in the tank the pseudochromis showed the same behavior to the angel. As long as you have larger fish or fish that does not swim in its territory I think you would be fine. The neon doesn't bother my green chromis, but then they don't swim in the same part of the tank.

I have two clowns m and thanks to your advices I will not get a dottyback. Instead I decided that I will get flasher wrasse male perhaps 2 females, blue spotted jawfish, and green clown goby.

I have been photographing and writting my setup will start thread soon.

I have a splendid dottyback and a clown that looks like a blizzard clown
Both are happy and share their home with a serpent star to be blunt the star and the dottyback are often seen near each other
I have seen the dottyback bring food to the serpent star.

Once in a while I see someone that claims theirs is peaceful, but that's not very often.
I'll never put a doty in any of my tanks again.
If you do have a problem, catching them is usually a pain.

I think passing on the dottyback was a good idea. I had one and it was nothing but pure mean. Just mean for the sake of being mean. Drop dead gorgeous but what a mean bastard!
