Sponge and Zoas

Over the last 2 weeks this sponge has started taking over these zoas. The sponge hitchhiked on the plug but it laid dormant for almost 5 months now it decided to start taking over. How do I get rid of the sponge?

I have had almost the exact same thing after moving a zoa. I manually removed as much as I could with a toothpick and left it exposed to the air but moist about an hour to try to trap air in the sponge. It has receded but IDK if it will come back. Hopefully someone will have a better solution for you.

Thanks Jeremy I didn't even think about exposing it to air. That's definitely the obvious answer. I'll have to give it a try.

Yea I have 2 rapidly growing white sponge colonies trying to take over some zoas...tagging along.

The thing to look into is make sure you don't have silicates in your source water. Other than that air and physical removal is the only answer I have.

Will the GFO reactor I just purchased help with silicates? It's a metal right? I use RO/DI always.

I have that exact same stuff. No clue where it came from or how to get rid of it. I pucked it once and the zoas seemed to have taken over.

Yes, GFO is supposed to remove silicates. RO/DI should remove silicates but certain areas the water has so much it requires special Hi-S membranes to deal with.

That might be the reason.... I don't do many water changes, but I just did one 2 weeks ago, right when this all started. I use RODI as well. hmm...... silicates

the zoas look fine to me. if the sponges arent going over the polyps, what is there to worry about?
Yeah the sponge is growing over the polyps, right now there are about 5 of them that are overtaken and if I don’t do something about it, it won't be long before more will follow suite.

It is also possible your DI resin is running out or has developed channels in it if it is horizontal. So many possibilities :D
