Spot lighting

Since I do like clams, and feel that in the future I would like to have more;) , I have been thinking lately of different setups. What I would like to do is make a platform out of pvc and eggcrate and place this in the 90g. Right above the platform I would hang the MH (this is a 175w, 10,00K). The rest of the tank would have regular lighting (NO's). The clams would be placed on top of the platform, along with some corals, away from pesky hermits that are in this tank. The shelf would also be a good place for the lionfish to hide under too.
Would this work? How far below the waterline should the top of the platform be, taking into consideration the adult size of maxima, deresa clams? I ask the last one because I don't know how "tall" these clams get.
BTW, my little ultra blue maxima is doing great, thanks to all for the great info!!
:D

Far enough below the water line so that when the clam violently contracts to clear it's gills, it won't spray your light fixture.
