Spring frag swap! 05/18/13 @ the odeum

Did you mean

Sorry for the delay in responce. I did post on RC in responce last night, and don't feel I need to repeate those comments here too.
I will give some other info here....Some of my thought process for the $5 admission was to simplify the entry at the beginning of the swap. Let's face it, past swaps the raffle and the entry to the event has been a fiasco due to lack of a little pre-planning. That is part of what this is about, to expedite the chaos at the beginning and not have our participants standing in line for 30 min...they should spend that time spending money at our vendors and buying raffle tickets.

Another reason for the decrease in cost to non-members was a trial thing. There is to be 2500-3000 other people at the venue for other events. Part of the club's mission statement, that I agree with, is to promote the hobby, that is the purpose for the minimal fee for all, and maybe they will be some raffle tickets and make up the difference and get in the hobby if they win a tank, then join the club to learn how to keep the tank alive. I guess we will see if it works out, but the reasoning behind it is positive, not greedy.

This is this boards first event...remember this board started Jan 1, 2013. There is not involvement or help from the past board members that planned past events, so we are learning as we go, cut us a little slack. You will see detailed financials at minimum quarterly, and/or after large events. I could not agree more on the issue of transparency and am surprise I am still a member from lack of it in the past, that is not usually how I roll.

I realize, due to some past issues with the raffle, that the refund to members in raffle tickets don't seem to be much of anything. But, I assure you, not one single decision about how the raffle is to be run has been made, but I want major changes to make it more appealing to everyone. Suggestions welcome, as always. Ideas thrown around.... Separate premium item with entry ticket only-one chance to win for all!....One big Drum for all tickets, not picking to put all your eggs in one basket for premium items-$700 in tickets will more likely get your a whole bunch of purple up and Rod's food! not that that's a bad thing on the Rod's food. This is where your participation will be appreciated to not have a fiasco and make the raffle more manageable.

I am speaking my opinion he and always. I will and would never submit a "Voice from the Board" unless I have brought it to their attention and got a vote on that issue. IMO nobody should be speaking on behalf of the CMAS Board without consulting the whole board. I am not an advocate of censoring in any way...other than personal attacks, slander, liable, etc. I'll take all input, and not take anything personally, and bring it for a group vote....the vote wins and I will back up that decision. This is the best practice I have found that works on NFP organization...and not to brag, but I am involve in quite a few....Ask and I'll submit the list.

So bring on the constructive comments. I can not check all the forums, so your voice is more likely to be heard directly on the CMAS site, so I encourage you to comment their so I don;t need to check multiple forums, as I am involved in a lot of things. "Why take the Job if I don't have Time?" I was just a bout begged too....and my commitment is to the Clubs structure of forming active committee's and allowing them to do their jobs. The members need to run this club as it is the members club. That being said, it the sole purpose for joining is to get in free and not be and active member, that is fine. That is another discussion that is happening about definitions of tiers of membership both commercial and regular. Once that is finalized we will continue to express them in amended by-laws, etc. and YES, we will need help with this.

Enough for now.
I said in the other thread, thy and be a part of the solution, not the problem.

Your New CMAS President

Which is a good response, although I don't personally agree. Also he needs to learn the difference between their and there.

No not the one I'm referencing. The one I'm talking about was so bad it was deleted in a couple hours. Something about a business "opportunity".

it takes getting beaten up like this for any real change to happen.

Dear CMAS board:

Close shop. Redistribute any remaining funds. Tell the membership to "pound sand."

I volunteer for a lot of things. All of it is out of the interest to satisfy others. Frequently.....it's just not worth it.

Just picked up something that was donated to the club that will be raffled off at the swap!!!! I dont know if i can share any details yet but you are not going to want to miss this swap!!!!!!!!

I plan on attending the swap. I have been a paid member of CMAS for 6 years. Ive no problem with the charge to members to get in because I understand the cost of these venues. This BOD is trying something new. I want to give them a chance. If it is unpopular they can change what is done next year. Two of the past three years I helped at the VFW swap either cooking or handing out the hamburgers and brats. If people want an active club they have to make contributions. I am currently a member of five clubs and on the BOD of one because I believe everyone needs to take a turn in the barrel. I look forward to when I am not on a BOD because it takes a lot of time and it is impossible to please everyone. But having said that I think the people in this hobby are a great group of people and great at sharing their knowledge. I personally would enjoy a frag swap just as much if there was no raffle but I know the BNARC swap would have lost money if not for the funds raised by the raffle. In the clubs that I cannot offer a lot of time to support club activities I tend to buy more raffle tickets so that I am helping feed the treasury. I think that transparency is vital to a successful club and know that the club whose BOD I serve on reports on the treasury at every monthly meeting. I recommend that to every club. I look forward to the CMAS fragfest. I hope it is well attended. Uncle Carl

Do they sell food at the ODEUM or should we plan on bringing drinks and snacks? Is there a list of raffle prizes available yet? Looking forward to the event based on the original vendor list. Thanks everyone for your hard work.

So I've been considering driving up for this. How do the prices compare to most LFS? This will be my first event, so I apologize for any dumb questions.

I've been looking to pick up a few cheap frags, but if the prices aren't special or anything, I don't really feel like making the drive.

LFS prices are so random it's hard to say. Some sellers have great prices, others I wouldn't touch. But the prices can always depend on their mood that day. You'll be able to buy rarer stuff and not pay shipping, which is the only reason I'm tempted to go. I also use it as a meet up for various trades and talking to fish people as my girlfriend calls you guys.

Last event i bought more the week before the event then i bought at the event and i pickedit all up at the event lol

Skunkmere my reference to everyone taking a turn in the barrel is my feeling that active BOD members are important but that it isn't a fun time because you can't please everyone because everyone has their own vision of what the perfect club is. It is like trying to serve the perfect meal .... you won't get a vegetarian and a steak eater like me to agree on the entries...we may reach a compromise but neither will be completely satisfied. But I think it is important for people to take a turn at trying to create a great club. If nothing else it makes you appreciate those on the BOD before and after your turn. I try to work at least one event in every club I belong to but I have found the time commitment to be on the board is a whole different level. Just my opinion.

I have found bargains at every swap meet I have attended but who the vendors and members selling frags make a big difference. I have never come home from a swap empty handed. But don't expect to pick up a Jason Fox coral for the price of a piece of SPS from your neighbor. I have only missed on CMAS frag swap since 2006, each is different but I have enjoyed each if only because it gives me a chance to visit with other members.

I didn't mean to question what you meant about the club. but where the term "in the barrel" reference came from, I know if from a filthy 5th grade joke. :) everybody Google it.

Hahaha... just Googled it... I've heard that joke before but would've never put two and two together. I wonder how many people use that reference and don't realize where it came from! :eek2:
