SPS food

I always used oysters, shrimp, clams, and a little sugar to offset any nutrient buildup. I'd dose AA about 15-30 minutes prior and then add the pappone, I always ground the frozen mash up with one of the "shake makers" the little electronic mixer with a blade on it and mixed with tank water. I will say the pods, cluster dusters, LPS, zoas, and SPS seemed to really like it, and my fish always went crazy trying to find the larger pieces. I have seen SPS attempt to close up on the food so I assume they ate it, though I don't know it for fact.

Thank you for the good info.

can you list what you use ? some like oysters can be made to liquid, but other stuff like squid tenticles cant be schopped up that fine [or at least iin my case] so would appreciate the "ingredients" as well.

right now I use Oyster, Salmon, baby cuttlefish, and shrimp.

thanks.

My recipe changes each time, based on what is available, Shrimp, assorted shellfish, assorted fish, the 40oz flat pack of PE Mysis, assorted frozen fish food from the LFS, etc. I don't have a set recipe, it changes every time. Only about a fourth of the ingredients get pureed, the rest is finely chopped. If I am lucky enough to get items with the guts in them, it goes into the puree portion. Stringy and tough items go into the coffee grinder which does a great job at mincing it up. We eat a lot of shrimp, big Gulf shrimp and the guts from them is added to the tank as a treat for the fish and I do the same for salmon, we get some excellent Scottish salmon from our local overpriced meat market, you can literally squeeze the oil out of it, the fish go nuts for it too.

IMO food is the most important thing we can do for the tank, it is impossible to replicate the amount and variety of food that corals get in the wild so the more we can add, the better. Of course that carries with it the responsibility of removing the excess nutrients but at this stage in the hobby, that isn't really hard. I feel too many people starve their tanks because of fear of algae. I realize that what I do may not work the same for everyone, but no matter what you do, feed the tank, not just the fish.

Does DT still cary oster eggs since he moved south?

I'm not sure, but it's still on their website. Of the 3 foods I mentioned I use the other two now and haven't used the oyster eggs in some years.

Adding the smallest golden pearls to Sirreals' food, or a similar homemade food, would make for a pretty good all around fish and coral food.

Are there no real comments on products like "Reef Energy A & B" from RedSea? Or "Marine Snow"? I know that Marine Snow and Reef Energy B are mostly Amino Acid products; correct? But what about Reef Energy A? I think it's supposed to be dissolved organics.

Well I started to use oyster feast last night and the Sps seemed to react no different then before with other foods. I will report back in a month and let you know how it's working.

I've been using coral frenzy for about a year but honestly only really notice LpS liking it.. Don't see any reaction from SPS.. I've been dying to make some home made I think I'm gonna give it a whirl I have a good fish market a little north of me and I'd rather feed the whole tank at once for a change..

I actually have a multi blender brand new from a wedding gift 5 years ago I can snake and my wife won't worry about it.. Wish me luck ;)..

Also does anybody know if any amino acids at like GNC will be beneficial in a reef? I know there's cheaper alternatives out there than $25 for an Oz..

The real question should be, does anyone know if amino acids dosed in any way are beneficial to a reef aquarium. ;)

Touche'.. ;).. That is a good one I've got limited experience with aminos and take it as that but I've been having issues keeping certain SPS colors in my frag tank from what they are in the DT.

(newer system less than 2 years very low nutrients) after chasing all the normal problems I tried brightwell coral amino and I can say I've noticed improvement. But on the other hand I also have been feeding heavier in general and added 2 banished fish to the sump.. I do know so far it hasn't hurt the system but can't say it's the sole reason my colors are leveling out..

That said I can't justify the price of it when like you say I'm not even positive that did the trick . There's got to be raw ingredients freely available not some revolutionary potion in a tiny bottle priced like gold ;) . I'm honestly on the fence and am sure I can go without it but I'm still curious if someone has found what it is in raw form.. Guess I gotta go search it out now lol..

Great thread Op I know have a few bookmarks and methods to experiment with on my homemade cuisine for my tanks..

I have a whole library of reef books, not one single author of what I've read so far uses any bottled sps food. They feed all other non sps corals like crazy the other stuff we've talked about, but no mention of what to feed sps. Frustrating.

Fish poop and zeovit XTRA have worked the best for me.... Heavy feeding and good husbandry.... I tried target feeding with no noticable difference... But raising my nitrates just a bit really made the color take off. Before that XTRA made a big difference...

Not current pics, but I am lacking time to take current pics, I have a room to get insulated but here are some from Spring, I think. Camera is a cheap 6 mp Fuji. The color is a little more pale than the corals really are but it is fairly close.

Reef Roids, or Oyster Feast for me but it's just what I have on hand. I may try a new product call polyp booster or something? I prefer the bottle form over the powder form. I don't target feed unless I'm feeding some of my lps.

I also should note I'm a VERY light feeder, both fish and coral. In the past 3 years I've used maybe 2 bottles of Oyster feast and a 1/3rd of my Reef Roids.

Plenty of the bibles we have (reef books) were written prior to the bulk of the feeds getting on the market ;)
