SPS keepers, do you run fileter socks?

No powerheads in the sump for me. I DO run filter socks though; four at a time! See sump diagram below:

All socks 100 microns.

I just use my Intank Media basket that sits under my drain and cut out filter squares and simply throw it away after a few days. works great!

I have a 66x turnover (1320 Gallon in 200 Gallon tank). Also the sump is high flow everywhere. BB tank, high flow everywhere and wet skimming allows the detritus to be exported by the skimmer. I don't find detritus anywhere besides in the collection cup :) I think wet skimming makes you able to export larger particles.

If I had a tank with less flow and detritus accumulated in the sump maybe I would use a sock. But I would change it every day to prevent the collected detritus to break down.

ok. I am willing to go sockless a try.
I mean, if the skimmer can really get the detritus, then that's great.
I am not looking for a very detailed explanation why no sock works or a reefkeeping magazine article about it (is there one?), but I need more than a catchy phrase to go on. I get the reasoning using sock is a hassle. don't we frequently see posts here on how to clean sump due to detritus build up? unless the return goes directly into the skimmer input, wouldn't adding a powerhead just make the detritus circulate around the the sump, back to the display etc. waiting for the chance to get sucked into the skimmer?

Every tank is dif.

I personally use a sock always have it just makes things clearer, yes it's a pain to change them out, but I like the added filtration and it really slows the water crash into the sump.

I don't run a filter sock. Maybe to polish the water for a few hours after stirring things up during a water change, but that's about it. I prefer everything to circulate freely until I need it to stop.

A powerhead will make detritus circulate until it is exported by the skimmer, that's the idea :) In the meantime some inhabitants can feed on it.
I don't have exact measurements, but I've used socks in the past which I cleaned regularly (let's be honest, almost no one will change them out EVERY day after a while) and noticed an increase in nitrates. I think phosphates would have been increased also, but I don't trust the test kits enough to state that.
But the rise in nitrates made sense to me. Nutrient rich particles (detritus) in a high flow and oxygenated environment convert to nitrates relatively fast. Just my experiences though :)

There's nothing wrong with filter socks I think, I also use them. But I always use them for a short period because of the reasons above.

makes sense, thanks.
I'll try it. I have a spare koralia 3, I'll see if thats enough. I have a small sump.

Sumpless here, and I run a canister with a filter sponge and carbon 24/7. Thinking about taking it out, since I'm VERY lazy about changing the carbon. If I do that, I'm going to fill the canister with seachem matrix, and keep it as a bio/cryptic filtration module.

What do you SPS'ers think?

Lol your lucky if you can change it every 3 days. I need to change my sock every day-2 days.... been thinking of removing the sock all together but.... dont know if its a good idea.... any suggestions?

just started with a sock 100 mc and my nitrates have droped form .30 to .3 :bounce2: but I also recently add my Bubble King 300 ext :hammer: and this baby pulls out some goo. I cleaned the cup and it added up to 2 full coffee cups of thick mud
