SPS keepers, do you run fileter socks?

I use em got 3 running on my tanks

No socks, the detritus is blown around and the skimmer takes care of it. I only use socks when I work in the tank or do a large waterchange, just to clear the tank up fast again.

well said i only use when needed. they can pull to much out if running big skimmer along side

.30 and .3 is the same number, by the way.

I don't use them, never have and probably never will. I see nothing wrong with them unless you have a lot of filter feeders in the system. SPS are filter feeders too. A 100 micron sock starts out as 100 microns but as it fills with stuff it filters out finer and finer particles. As far as stuff collecting in the sump, that is what I want as it makes it easier to suck out with my Python. When I feel the need to polish the water, a Magnum with floss works just fine.

Obviously you can have a great SPS tank and run filter socks or you can have a great SPS tank without them.

if one takes a pump and "storms" their aquarium they'll see a lot of stuff kick up. Mechanical filtration helps to eliminate the accumualtion of this detritus. Crystal clear water allows for maximum light penetration. Ideally, you want to be able to look down a length of your aquarium and clearly see the other end.
Mechanical filtration (whether a sand filter or sock is used) is worth the trouble if a clean "SPS" type biotope is to be re-created IMO/IME.

no

Once every week or two I will take a shop vac with an small attachment to suck any detritous off of the floors of all tanks, overflow boxes and sumps.

I use small 4" 200 micron. They fill up quick and I hate the noise when they overflow so I'm religious about swapping them every other day but every time I change one I seed it w/ 15ml of microbacter7. Trates are imeasurable, Phos is imesurable.

what about all the zeovit... Neo Zeo Vodka users... do you guys use filter socks or does it hinder the flow of bacterioplankton?????????

Felt socks for me. Change them every 3 days in addition to 2 Tunze skimmers on a 90 gallon. Very little algae growth and the coral colors have never been brighter, nothing is brown at all!
