The end.

Wow it looks like an alien tool a leak in there. That is serious stuff.

RUTZ,

Im going to grab a box of this rock and buy some regular fiji here in town to add to it.

Ace,

Thanks man!..Hoping you can hang to the clowns for a little bit longer :)

JOHNNYBRAVO,

My brain twitches every time i look at those pictures.. I guess I'll never know what that **** was..

On the other hand, it feels good starting off fresh with some nice new, uncured, rock..

Hey Clown, Salty critter always has really nice rock in and they might be able to beat the LA prices

that stuff in your tank is disgusting.

Isnt it weird when you have a buddy whos system is going thru something like this and you cant help except to take their livestock and then get attached to it.... Been there.

About the rock..

I dont like the fact i cant pick it myself..and rock here in town is ugly and expensive....bleh!

The tank is now clean and dried. Im kind of apprehensive about starting it again. I just need to get my hands on some nice live rock. I already bought a new bucket of salt.

Clown, Sorry to see your tank got slimed too, but atleast I don't feel so bad now abou tmy experience. I suffered from exactly this same thing some mysterious slime that developed from a mix of dosing Prodibio and Reef Genesis coupled with Vodka, some wild bacterial slime. I have many pictures on this problem I had to tear down my shallow cube 30X30X17 and throw out my LR and clean everything with a heavy vinegar mix. I ended up buying Fiji rock from Aquarium Arts. Previously, I had a mix of LR and rock I cured from dead rock and resseded.

DV,

You got slimed too?.. Its the worst thing that could happen. This thing propagates soooo fast.. The whole equipment gets covered inside and out by a think layer of goo that wont wash off. You have to scrub it off. Skimmer pump..nano streams..wave box..EVERYTHING was covered in this crap. I dont wish this **** on any body..

same thing happened to my 2.5 when it was stocked- slimed up in 2 days and everything died

least you didnt have major livestock :/

I posted a thread on this slime, (which at the time I was the only I knew with this problem) another reef site about 8 months ago, I will find the link and post it here. I potsed and monitored this entire event. I feel bad for ya, I will say this that what I did find that helped was dosing with Myacin, however it only temporarily haulted the slime growth, then once I stopped dosing it bloomed again. I know the slime covers everything and smells awful too. It looks like something I wont exactly say what but you get the idea, like a porno got filmed in your tank....gross lol I had to tear it all down as well, clean and scrub everything in vinegar.

I will also say be very careful to let everything dry out, do not put back wet, or you will see this stuff come back, not as bad as before but it will remerge. DO NOT USE ANY LIVE ROCK FROM YOUR PREVIOUS SETUP!! I made that mistake and fought this stuff 2 times.

I will say this slime was a huge lessoned learned. I strayed away from traditonal methods of reef keeping and went into the tekky end of things. I started using Prodibio, Reef Genesis and Vodka dosing. I'm not saying these are bad methods, but I have had amazing results with just buying really good LR, and sticking to regular water changes. Using Seachem salt now, and nothing more, besides kalk top off and Calcium reactor. No more high tech guru stuff for me. I'm just too damn dumb to use it correctly, and way to scared to see that slime come back again.

I'm telling you when you see this stuff in person it reminds you of Alien, its bizzare. I wanted to send some of the stuff to a biologist friend of mine at Brookhaven Nationa Lab for study. lol

Melev, my hypothetical assumption is that it is a mono strain of bacteria. I believe adding Reef Gensis ( a manufactured bacterial strain) and then adding Prodibio and Vodka allowed one these strains to grow exponentially and eventually become a MONO STRAIN taking over the tank given a proper carbon source. ie: Vodka.

cheers

DV,

Exactly! This goo covers everything.. Im not gonna lie.. Im kinda scared to fire everything back up..I went through this **** twice and i DO NOT want to see it again.

The live rock is drying outside..Ill probably use it as paper weights or something.. All my equipment was carefully cleaned..scrubbed and dried..and is stored away.

Im gonna PM Liveaquaria and see if they can make me a 35lb. live rock package instead of the 24 lb. they offer.. Im in no rush of setting it back up. I might just fill it with saltwater and let it run until i get the rock.

I swear if i see the slime again im gonna **** myself..LOL

That's a reasonable assumption, based on the facts you've posted. So you never did send that stuff to your friend to test? I think I would have.

Melev, I really should have my wife tells me all the time I should have. The guy was really a neighbor of mine and decent enough to examine it for me, plus I'm sure it would have sparked his interest but alas I didn't follow through on it. Kicking myself now, trust me lol.

Clownreef, Do you perchance have any of this stuff left?

I swear to all who haven't seen it before, it is reallt frightening stuff.

The stuff reef nightmares are made of lol.

cheers

DV,

Actiually i do have some goo floating in a bucket that also has vinegar and water..dont know if this would work. The live rock still has some goo in it.. The thing that amazes me the most was the fact it grew sooooo fast.

Ive seen systems crash before..but this goo makes you have to tear down EVERYTHING and clean it. I cant believe i had to do it twice..

Let's mail the goo to his friend. The weather is perfect, as it isn't super cold or super hot yet.

Ship a rock. You aren't using it anyway, and if they were crazy enough to drill for a sample.... ;)

Yes, that is a possibilty. Bio-seal is not reef-safe. I always recommend people pay $3 more for a tube of "Aquarium Safe" silicone, sold at most LFS, as well as in the glues section of Home Depot.
