SPS tanks and "night mode" MP40's.

With a full SPS tank, how many of you reefers are turning on the "night mode" of your MP40's/MP60's?
I just wondered if there was any real advantage to it vs decreased nutrient export.
Let me know your thoughts.

I do it so that I don't hear a hum because I sleep next to my tank. Granted I only have mp10's. F nutrients, I gotta sleep too :)

In my previous 150G tank, I ran 4 MP40s, I never used that feature though. Polyps (SPS) extended fully during the night even when the MP40s ran at same "daylight setting". The humming sound at night, however were quite annoying...

I run my 2 MP10s full blast on reef crest all day and all night. The only time I turn them down is for feeding just so the fish can actually catch the food.

I didn't even know it had a night mode, I've kept it on the reef crest at 100% ever since I got it. Full PE at night, I don't bother to turn it down when I feed.

Night mode is a silly concept for me, as are moonlights for the sake of the corals. If you've ever been diving at night you'll realize that the "flow" isn't really any different from during the day. Also, even with a big ole full moon, it's really dark...

I have always used night about 2 hours before lights go out...

Granted I don't believe it effects any SPS one way or another, however, my Mandarin and other various fish, crabs, snails, creatures, are much more active....
My lps like it too.

wouldn't turning the flow down at night have a similar effect to the ocean? I know there was a statement above about how it doesn't differ, but... I beg to differ. Sure, SOME nights might be somewhat turbulent, but for the most part, the ocean is much more calm at night. Also, the PE is much longer at night, so wouldn't feeding be maximized by using nightmode to " calm" the flow?

Don't mean to hijack this thread - but do you have to do this manually everynight or is it programmable for night mode. Thx!

No, you can set it for night mode and it turns it on automatically, at that set time, and lasts for 10 hours.

In nature, maybe not happen and not necessary. But I found night mode "artificial" feature help solution dosing beyond standby feature. Dosing solution does not happen in nature, but we do that aren't we!? and I don't think that silly. Anyway, that just me, you don't have to agree.

This has been explained ad nauseum. The actual, underwater, currents do NOT change at night.

Waiting for Jack (sirreal) to come in with his 5 links that explain this perfectly citing credible sources. :)

I run the NM in sync with the radions as well as the moon feature. In a closed environment I do this for the inhabitants to ramp it down as night sets in...the morning sun rises and reefcrest begins. Did I just rhyme? Anyway, I guess it's preference.
