Stan's 75g Rimless Reef

Thanks Julio!

Planning ahead -- still deciding on how to skin the tank. Not sure if I should use magnets to make door removable because the "door" is HUGE (going to be about 40" wide!). So magnets might not be the most economical way of going about it.

After speaking with Dr. Harry, he brought up the French Cleat system, however I'm figuring out how that would work without having the door expose a gap between frame and the door.

Hopefully it'll be figured out and completed over the weekend. Then gunna spend a few days next week polyurethaning and sanding and polyurethaning and sanding... and (you get the picture). I wanna have a real nice thick "glassy" coat.

Brand new filters for the RO are ordered.

3 Sediment
2 DI
1 RO

Only thing left is another phosban reactor, because I'm sick of the BRS style ones.

Only thing I'm scared of is that they say low-iron glass is easier to scratch! :sad2:

So gotta be extra careful cleaning...

this is absolutely true. I have a DeepBlue 57 and put a horrible scratch right in the middle of the front plate the first week I had it.

good luck with the tank!!

nice setup man!......your stand sounds like its gunna be sweet!
i fiddled with removable doors using magnets but i never followed thru....so i look foward to see what you come up.
your gunna love a tall stand tons of vertical room.

Little Update

Little Update

So picked up some stuff to "skin" the stand with at Lowes yesterday.

Found a decent deal on a "A/C" grade plywood. The face is a nice Pine sheet that looks interesting.

And picked up a few pine 1x3s & 1x4s that I'll be using for the rest of the trim.

As far as the door goes... still not sure what to do.

I want it to removable.. and here are the ideas I've came up with and have been given so far..

#1) Magnets
#2) Decorative Screws that have handles
#3) Decorative Hooks
#4) Industrial Strength velcro (not sure if its really a viable option due to weight of the door)

And thats it.

I did find some pretty strong magnets at Lowes... there is no weight rating however. Couldn't find a rating for the velcro either. Argh.

If you have any ideas I'm all yours.

I did find a nice backing for tank. Found this contact paper that is meant to be used as a liner for inside drawers and cabinets. Flat black adhesive roll. Covered the tank with it perfectly!

How about making a top and bottom track for the door to sit in maybe out of 1X2 by routing the track into them. You can put corresponding tabs along the top and bottom edges of the door. This way, you can slide the door to either side, or all the way off, from either side.

Build slowed down a tiny bit.

Trim for the stand is just about done, however I'm still looking into how to accomplish a removable door.

Found a buncha magnet places online that sell "mounting magnets". Seems to be what I need.

Still gotta look a bit more. After I find what I'm looking for pretty much just gotta hang the door and start painting.

Not entirely sure if I'm going to stain and polyurethane or just polyurethane.

On another note..

I upgraded the sump. My sister's boyfriend had a brand new 40g breeder in the garage with pre-cut glass baffles. Will post up a pic. little bit later. So instead of a 29g tall sump I'll have the 40 breeder.

Thats about it for now.

As anxious as I am to get this tank up and running (especially before I start my next semester next week), I'm going to take it slow and really think everything through so that I'm happy with the outcome.

On the long list of things that I needed to get.. pretty much only a few things remain.

1) Magnets or whatever I end up using to create the removable door.

2) Stain & polyurethane

3) Coral RX (have a red flatworm problem in the current tank, so I want to dip every coral I have before transferring to the new tank.

4) "Dirty" used water change water from one of my reef club buddies, to help boost my new tank cycle. I'd like to use a substantial amount along with MicrobeLift Special Blend and NiteOut.

And thats basically it, besides plumbing that I'll pick up with Jarrett Shark.

Progress

Progress

Stand is NEARLY complete. Just staining and polyurethaning left.

Got my magnets!!! 4 of them. :bounce3:

Each magnet can hold... 58 pounds!!! And.. yes... it is overkill.

It is a "tad" difficult to get the door off. But its on there solidly. :lolspin:

Any way here are some photos...

I can't take credit for the construction, couldn't have done it without my good old Dad! Ideas were mine, but he materialized them!

So as stated before.. just staining and polyurethaning.

However Dad decided that my basement (which has been practically untouched since the house was built in 1968) needs some renovating. A very simple renovation. Just removing the crumbling drop ceiling, and replacing the tile. Shouldn't take longer than 2-3 weekends of work. At least I hope. However, I'm taking this build slow, planning it out as much as I can so I don't have any regrets later. I mean reefing is probably one of the most patience requiring hobbies, right?

So what good is beautiful tank in an ugly room? And I mean... UUUUUGLY!

So I hope the next time I update this thread, it'll be with the stand completely finished and the tank running with water and cycling!

*I chose Golden Pecan for Stain and Helmsman Spar Urethane for the glossy/glassy finish.

**Debating about getting another MP10 (don't know if 1 MP10 will cut it) and also changing skimmer from ASM G-2 to a Reef Octopus Skimmer Model 4 or 6...

Stay tuned.
