I was just checking out the preorder from copps posted up by tmz. About 2 years ago I did a group order with some local guys and purchased also, from copps a small 1/2" piece of the starburst monti cap. Got to say its been the slowest growing cap Ive ever had,but a real gem.

Anyone else have this coral ,if so how did it grow for you?I think mine has only grown to maybe 3 1/2"- 4 " inches in the time Ive had it....love to speed it up if possible.

Heres a pic for anyone not familar with this coral.

I SEE PIECE YOU CAN BREAK OFF FOR MEEEE That Monti is screaming! One thing I don't like about plating montipora is how fast they do grow.

What lighting and flow do you have on it? Looking forward to mine. Thanks for the info.

Some plating montipora grow crazy fast. I had an orange one that went from 3" to 12" in a year. 4"x4" frags could be taken every couple of months, sustainably.

It does seem that the slowest growing ones are also the prettiest though

Some guy was selling a version of it in the livestock selling forum last week. I split a copps order with Cardiff last year but that was not one of the corals I picked up.

I have a tyree season's greetings monyi that gows extremely fast. Trying to figure a placement for the starburst. Probably put it in one of the frag tanks for a while . Ther are differnt lighingt opitions there.

Mine seems to like lower lighting . I have it under t-5 's ,indirect light about 15" down.
Some things I've noticed about it ,it tends to grow irregular in shape compared to other plating caps ,not real symetrical like the typical growth patterns ive seen of plating caps.

The polyps ,themselves are very small ,too, compared to other caps.Probably half the size ,like micro size.
I think it's only grown 3" in the 2 years Ive had it.

Wow, I want it... badly. I hadn't realized that copps had it in stock, otherwise I would have gone in on it with you guys. It's probably for the best ;)

It's here but small. Great color.I'll keep you in mind when it grows. Hope it grows faster than Steve's. Thanks for the placement info, btw.

I have one on order from Copps so we will see how it grows. I should have one in the next two weeks. It will be good to increase the monti cap inventory in WNY.

So Far I have.
Red Hot Chili Pepper Monti Cap
Strawberry Patch Monti Cap
Tyree Idaho Grape Monti Cap
Red Monti Cap
Purple Edge Green Plating Cap (pending)
Reef Tech Starburst (pending)

what an awesome monti. They are quickly becoming my favorite corals and I will need to start getting some more variety.

I have one as well. Very slow grower for me, seems to hate high light and the lower pH of a calcium reactor-driven reef. One of my friends grew a 5" colony in less than a year while dosing 2 part.

How low is low? So is it a middle of the tank kind of coral?

That's great info to have. I have lot's of those spots. I also keep alk reasoanlbly high with kalk dosing. CO2 scrubber a little 2 part two. No CACO3 reactor. We'll see how it grows. Thanks everyone

I've never tried placing it under a ledge, but it does seem like any direct light tends to bleach it out. So,I just left under indirect light.
Think Ill try under a ledge for a bit and see what happens.

~ tnyr5,
Are the polyps on yours really small compared to other more common caps?On mine their micro size ,not sure if that's how they are or if placement (lighting) or something more sinister is in play?
Thanks,

-Steve

It's beauty in person. Better than I hoped for. I have it on a frag rack untill it grows a bit. Less chance for a sting there. It's under a 150 se phoenix mh 20k lamp about 8 inches down. Holding color. I dose kalk and a little 2 aprt ; ph 8.2 to 8.35. PO4 <.O3ppm ,NO3 <O.2ppm. I've been talking to it eah night asking it to grow.

-Cully, the pic I posted is not mine fwiw.I used it to show what its suppose to look like.If you look at the pic and notice the growing edge where the polyps are extremely small ,that is what mine looks like all throughout.Polyps are so small I cant really tell if they're yellow or not.Its been that way since Ive got it.Im thinking its to much light now....hmmmm.

I dont have a Ca/x and I don't think ph is an issue with daily limewater additions Im able to keep ph relatively stable at upper 8.35/4 during the day with bottom 7.8/9 at night.Alk & Salinity are the 2 parameters I keep a close eye on.Stable @ 1.027 & dkh 9-9.3.

Hi Steve , the polyps on mine are larger ; just like the picture you posted. I'm going to be extra careful with light.
