I have a banded sea serpeant star. I'm guessing other do, too? Have you ever witnessed them feeding? When I put food in the tank the star is aware and comes out. He uses his arms like feelers and when he finds a piece of food he curls one of his arms up around it and tucks it up under his mid-section. Usually I see him do it with pellets. Today I saw him do it with a spirulina flake. Has anyone else seen this behavior? The first time I saw it I was amazed. Does anyone know more about these creatures that can share more?

I have a red serpent star.Follows the same feeding pattern you described. It is harmless ,ime.
Iv'e read that the green serpents have been known to become predatory to small sleeping fish.Saw some pics that documented it pretty well in a aquarium magazine.
Also, read an article once ,years ago ,where the red serpent had bred in someones tank. Its the only breeding Ive ever heard of to take place in a closed system. Might have been Gregg Shrimer but I'm not at all sure about who it was.

My Serpents always have their arms out waiting for food and they get from normal feedings and from fish waste. With their tiny hairs on the arms, they move food particles along to the mouth/body which stays hidden under or in the rock. I rarely see them completely out in the tanks.

I got a couple of frags from a Reefer in Greece 7 or 8 months ago and they were COVERED with brittle star babies. Easily 50 of them.

Those are mini brittle stars and they will multiply and be a good member of the CUC, but they stay really small. The larger ones almost never breed in closed system.

My Brittle Star is very reclusive, but if he sticks out an arm during feeding, I'll target feed him whatever the rest are eating.
