Yeah it definitely has lost the whole "new and clean" look. I've thought about scrubbing it out, but it's like... what's the point?

Next time I pull the return pump out for maintenance I may scrub down the section... same with the skimmer section.

Also, I need to drop a turbo snail in the fuge again. I noticed last night that there has been an explosion of some kind of fuzzy almost clear algae in the fuge.

lol... what I would give to have my skimmer look like that again!
Yeah I'm definitely loving the performance... but the smell when I empty it... not so much.

me too--I let the berlin turbo go without changing the cup to see how long it would take to fill--gave up after a week:mad:

I guess on a positive note it shows what a good job two refugiums can do on a system. The water is crystal clear, and I haven't done a water change in two months now

I have read both good and bad for keeping the sump like that T.J.
If you have algae like that in the sump then you know you have phosphates and nitrates there which is not a good thing, on the other hand not cleaning the algae off is allowing it to consume the nitrates and phosphates somewhat like a refugium

i have a section of white fuzz algae in my sump area, the turbo doesnt go there anymore, he likes the refug and return area tho.
i left some fan worm husks since i couldnt get them all when i set up the tank, well they finally fell off and i think thats were my white "algae" or fungus is comming from.

If you empty it daily and rinse it out, the smell is far less objectionable. :)

figured i would post a pic of my tank and refug since i have been tagging along and asking questions for the last couple of months so

FTS as of an hour ago, the lights had just turned on so nothing was fully extended.

a quick shot of the refug, i dont have alot of room under the tank, so its a 29 gallon refuge with a small return section and large refuge area. i only have about 3.5 inches of clearence above the 29 gallon.

either drain you sump right out and clean it next time you do a water change or put a power head in there for a week or so

Marc, I know I have been cavalier in the past about my berlin turbo skimmer but I am worried about the situation.
The tank is going great--water parameters are all great ect but I really think it is being run on the sump and two refugiums
I don't even get a cup of skimmate out of it a week now.

I don't have the money right now really to upgrade but I just talked it over with my wife and we came to the conclusion that it has to be replaced if it is going to jeopardize the display tank

There is 160 lb live rock in the dt, 35 in the sump, and 50 between the two refugiums. Both refugiums are packed with chaeto and have 6 inch dsb's.
The total water column is about 200 gal.

The bioload is heavy in the display tank and will be heavier when I transfer the cbb and pb tang from quarantine
yellow, regal and sailfin tangs, 3 anthias, 3 gobies, foxface, basellet, coral beauty, 2 damsels(against all attempts to catch)

I respect your expertise so I will go by what you say
Scott

Haha... Yeah I usually get to it sooner, not much sooner, but this time around it was pretty bad. I'm usually good for 2 or 3 days... Any longer than that and my downstairs starts to smell rather unpleasant.

Tank is looking good

How long has it been running? It looks like you are getting some serious coraline growth in it.
