Tank is looking good

How long has it been running? It looks like you are getting some serious coraline growth in it.

its been up since mid feb, swift, i bought it and have been slowly upgrading everything it came with.

Bummer guys... someone picked up the Magnificent Foxface out of the Diver's Den before I could get to him... :sad2:

Now I have no idea what to buy???

Hey congrats Capn!!

And i agree, hopefully next month this thread will be nominated.

Btw capn, iv been meaning to ask, do you have a full shot of your sump/fuge bins? I just want to grab a glance at it all. You know, ''inspiration''.

Marc, I know I have been cavalier in the past about my berlin turbo skimmer but I am worried about the situation.
The tank is going great--water parameters are all great ect but I really think it is being run on the sump and two refugiums
I don't even get a cup of skimmate out of it a week now.

I don't have the money right now really to upgrade but I just talked it over with my wife and we came to the conclusion that it has to be replaced if it is going to jeopardize the display tank

There is 160 lb live rock in the dt, 35 in the sump, and 50 between the two refugiums. Both refugiums are packed with chaeto and have 6 inch dsb's.
The total water column is about 200 gal.

The bioload is heavy in the display tank and will be heavier when I transfer the cbb and pb tang from quarantine
yellow, regal and sailfin tangs, 3 anthias, 3 gobies, foxface, basellet, coral beauty, 2 damsels(against all attempts to catch)

I respect your expertise so I will go by what you say
Scott

I've seen quite a few of those skimmers and frankly they don't work all that well. It could be that the reason you see so little skimmate is because it doesn't work as well as others on the market. Knowing that you are on a budget, I would suggest you look at it closely and keep it super clean, even looking for any tweaks or mods that can make it work at peak efficiency.

You should be culling your macro algae monthly, tugging apart the remainder to encourage new growth. If your tank is doing well, I wouldn't make sweeping changes. You can always cull from one refugium one month, then the opposite the next.

Water changes are you friend, especially with the big fish. :)

Haha... Yeah I usually get to it sooner, not much sooner, but this time around it was pretty bad. I'm usually good for 2 or 3 days... Any longer than that and my downstairs starts to smell rather unpleasant.

I like to think about it like this: How often do you flush your toilet daily? The longer the skimmate sits in the collection cup, the worse it will smell.

When cleaning the cup, be sure to clean the riser tube as well. You want everything to be nice and clean.

mine doesnt work all that well if its dirty for what ever reason, once the green gunk on it is think it works 50% less.

good point... I usually clean the cup, body, and neck, but completely forgot about the riser tube.

good advice as always---I guess I better do a water change--its been two months now.
I have just felt that my corals have been doing better since I haven't been doing water changes and they are 90 per cent lps
That and keeping out of the display tank. I clean the substrate between the front glass every two weeks or so otherwise I have kept my hands out of the tank.
I am at the point where I am wrestling with a few concepts on here that very dichotomous and trying to see personally where I stand.;)
