Starting 90g Reef Tank Build... Finally!!!

After helping Capn with his skimmer install, the amount of water in the skimmer would rise and fall 3 to 4 inches in a matter of seconds. I have a Euroreef monster skimmer that has a gate valve on the output and have never experienced this type of surging water thing happen. My skimmer doesn't use its 2 sedra 5000 needlewheels to supply the water, Just Bubbles. My skimmer is an external recirculating model that is gravity fed from the first floor display tank and enters through the side, at the top of the skimmer. The Skimmer is in the basement like Scotts.
In Capn's case it seemed like the pumps weren't pushing a constant volume of water into the skimmer causing the water column to rise and fall. The airflow for the bubbles wasn't an issue. Maybe it's just part of the Break in period.

I didn't find it normal either. So Capn, has it settled down after running all afternoon?

its steady now--no surging--but still high--I am going to leave it until tommorow morning to make an adjustment

So what's going on with the PBT and CBB as of late?

They are still in the other tank. I will move the powder blue tomorrow to the display tank. I was just waiting to do the stuff we did today on it.
I am torn about moving the copper banded butterlfy--it is doing fanstastic where it is--I don't know what its reaction will be to all the tangs and that stupid damsels that just won't go away--carpet surf or something:lol:

capn here is a bad photo of the bubble coral like i promised

very nice Kudora--what kind of light and flow are you giving it--maybe I can make a third attempt at keeping it;)

Acronyms are great, but what the heck is a GSM?

Looks like a mandarine goby sticking its head out there

I've heard pagoda cups are difficult to keep....Is that true or opinion?

I had a bubble in my 55 for 11 months....It grew nicely. I had 2 175W MH and 2 48" VHO's. Placed it about three fourths of the way down, with low flow.

I had a pagoda cup that did great for 6 months and then it just started to deteriorate for no apparent reason. Nothing else in my tank had an issue and I lost the pagoda cup within 2 weeks. I never could figure out why it happened.

I've probably asked this a million times on this thread... well maybe 3.

What do you guys recommend for dipping corals before addition?

I'm making the 90 minute drive to Salty Critter tomorrow with a wad of cash, and probably coming home with none left.

Anyway, I've seen FW dips recommended, Lugol's, Reef dip... any thoughts? I would like to have an idea of what I plan on doing before I leave tomorrow morning.

I had one pagoda that did poorly... just withered away in about 5 months, but another one that sits right next to it (maybe a little more flow) and it doing much better than the first one ever did.....

I thought I could find a post of mine somewhere that had it all typed out, but alas...

No matter what I get, it goes into my quarantine tank first for a 12 hour bath in Interceptor. One tablet can handle 400g, so I crush it up and use a small amount in the quarantine tank. One tablet can dose that tank five or six times using the tiny Salifert spoon from one of my old test kits. Just mix it up in a cup of tank water until it is completely dissolved, and pour it in. Remember that shrimp and crabs are at risk with this product, which we use to kill red bugs.

The next day, I'll dip the coral in various solutions.

A small bowl of tank water with 4 drops of Iodine, which is mixed first the nthe coral goes into the solution for 5 minutes. About once a minute, I'll squirt it with a turkey baster from every possible angle, flipping the coral over as I try to blow off any pests that might be hiding.

Rinse in another bowl of water.

Another small container of tank water and ReVive is used to remove any AEFW. 4 capfuls per gallon, so perhaps one capful is enough for your bowl if it holds a quart of water. Turkey baste it a few times, and be sure to remove it from the solution within 5 minutes.

Rinse in a bowl of tank water.

Study it closely, very closely. If you see nothing unusual, you can now place it in your tank.

In a couple of days, I would then pull it out and secure it to a frag plug or rock. I think with all the dipping and meds, it would probably be too soon to glue it down the same day. Too much stress for a coral means it may not survive.
