Looks good Scott.

If that is where you do your top offs, I would recommend setting up an ATO unit soon. As fluctuating water levels can mess with the skimmer's performance.

What do you mean the air column is surging in... I'm guessing this is the "pulsing" noise?

Its very hard to set the air--its rising and falling into the next of the skimmer and then back to just above the label.
The air intake adjustment might need a valve on it to fine tune it--just a slim turn of the pipe really changes the bubble column.

What is pulsing???

I don't use the 45 degree angle and downward extension on my skimmer.

then how do you control the height of the bubble column?

With the standpipe.

okay now you got me---I thought the stand pipe and 45 degree were the same item?

no, the 45 degree is just a way of returning water to the sump without splashing.

The verticle extension (pipe that says "open" "closed") controls the amount of water flowing out of the skimmer, and the water height inside the skimmer body.

we have the 45 extension inside the verticle extension and are controlling the height by twisting the vertical extension.
We thought that the 45 inside turns open and shut and that is what controls the height??

okay--we are talking about the wrong part or referring to the wrong thing
Part of the vertical column has a 45 degree bevel on it --it is inserted in the vertical pipe--twisting this is what controls the amount of flow into the unit??

no, the verticle pipe that has the sharp/angled edge that extends out of the top of the "T" controls the water height.

By turning the pipe, the sharp/angled portion of the pipe will begin to cover the outlet hole on the "T." This will cause less water to be able to flow out of the skimmer, creating back pressure, which raises the water level inside the skimmer body.

Oh ok... yes we were talking about the wrong part. You are correct, the bevel or sharp edge which sits inside the "T" controls the water height in the skimmer.

The water height in my skimmer comes up to about 1/4" below where the body begins to slant toward the neck.

communication is a wonderful invention:rolleyes:

I can't get it there yet--its still up in the inner tube an inch or two
If I turn it down even the slightest then it goes right down

How long did it take your skimmer to break in and start producing skimmate?

skimmate....isn't that a lotion that repels mosquitos???

Check the summary.............I tried, tough to do with out my home pc. I could never live up to the T-gehs's index, or the Caps genious..................can you tell I feel better? ;)

will do Rae---I saw you creating something and didn't want to interrupt a while ago:D

2 weeks.

I just dropped it in the sump, and let it go. I didn't realize I needed to modify my standpipe, because of how deep the water was that it was sitting in. It was creating too much backpressure and overflowing my collection cup.

After I got that fixed, it was like a few days, not even.

I tried to draw on your picture where the water level is inside my skimmer.

I think mine will settle down to that level when the skimmer breaks in

BTW
You should see the water in the display tank tonight---its see through and every coral is out in full extension
Since the skimmer isn't skimming yet it has to be the 35 gal water change today, and the change in phosban and carbon media in the reactors.

Yeah it will settle down once it breaks in. Mine looked like a "foam cannon" (as another member put it) for the first 2 weeks. I would not recommend adding an air valve to the intake. I haven't seen anyone run it that way. Just use the standpipe to control the air/water mix.

A gate valve mod on the standpipe would allow you more precise control of the mix if you think you need it.

Good stuff... I heard corals can sometime "pout" for 24hrs when you change the carbon media?

only my wife's coral does that;)
