Starting a 120gal

Starting a 120gal setup, have a 55gal existing, would appreciate input from all you experienced Reefers on equipment for my new project. Opinions on Pumps, Powerheads and Skimmers, Im all eyes and ears. This is what I have so far, 120gal AGA 4'x2'x2' with two internal overflows, 40gal Sump, 48" Coral life 492W fixture, two 200W Heaters, and some misc parts. Working on acquiring return pumps, powerheads, and a skimmer. Any advice on setting this tank up right the first time would be great.

Thats alot like the tank that i have. 120gal. 4'x 2'x 2'. Lighting has two 150watt HQI and two 130watt dual Actinic. 50gal. sump with a Euro-Reef skimmer, Ouietone 6000 pump. Mostly leather corals with a few fish I'am in Ripon if you would like to see it.

I was thinking about going with two Quite one 3000's. That would be cool to check out sometime.

First off, congrats on the new tank! In order to provide the best feedback on equipment, what is your budget and finance limitations?

I can definitely recommend a BMW as a great car and a must have, but if you can't afford it....ya know! ;)

If you have the money, I'd looking into the VorTech circulation pump. They are pricey but IMO the best and most versitile on the market. Plus you can't beat the profile: http://www.ecotechmarine.com/

I have the QuietOne and really like it, quiet, small and efficient. You might also want to check out Eheim. I know Brianbigoats swears by them.

Skimmer is another one that is definitely dependent on budget. Get the most you can get. Don't cut corners because they are all costly and no need to spend $150 on a piece of junk when you end up spending the $300+ later...for $450 you could ket a killer skimmer get good deals on quality ones for around $300.

Keep researching, keep asking questions and remember everyone has their own loyalties, opinions and preferences...so take it all with a grain of salt and research, research, research!

Well the Vortechs are very nice, but not sure if I want to invest that much into circulation when a few $40 to $60 powerheads will work for now. Im leaning towards the Quite One pumps. The Skimmer I dont mind spending the $ for the right one for my tank. Ive been looking at the Octopus Extreme 200,250, and the ASM G-3. Dont mind spending the money for quality products.

I have the Seio Props in the 55gal now, and was thinking of the Koralias in the 120gal. I plan on keeping a mixed reef, add a few more fish to what I have and stick with the soft corals for now.

Anthony, I must be doing something right, because she gave me the go ahead and didnt ask for anything in return. I think the main concern she had was that a new tank wasnt going to take up half our living room.

He he he...I think all of our better halves have some sort of hidden "Ace up the sleeve"...she's just waiting to find that diamond ring she's always wanted ;)

That's how she got her Yorkie puppy ;) All she said was I'll give you the same amount of $$ for your tank....SOLD! Now I love that little critter, never thought I would.

My buddy lives out in Manteca. If you ever need any help or anything let me know. I'm usually out there quite a bit. Manteca is on my way home from work :)

I think you guys' got it right, my 55 cost me a 20 year ring "and"an upgrade to the original. Don't forget that the new house "allows" me to reposition the tanks. All in fun.

That is cool. Its fun to watch my fiance get excited about things. Took her to Kalypso's and walked away with a pair of Ocellaris clowns and three polyps of Tubbs Blue Zoas i wasn't planning on getting. I think I should take her to more stores and steer her towards some cool things :)

Also count me in if you need any help. I love meeting fellow reefers and love working on projects or just chilling and talking reef. Manteca isn't too far away for me.

Brian - It's time for a tour of the Bay Area Fish Stores....

Funny my 60G cost me a new half yorkie / half Bichon Frise we named 'Broddie' and like you it has become one of my favorite pets...go figure.

Thanks for the input and the offers of help with the project. Its coming along slower than I would like. Now I'm leaning towards the Tunze 6065 powerheads.

Hey DDRR,

Have you checked out the Vortech MP20? Granted they are basically a slightly downgraded, but FULLY upgradable version of the MP40. I know its a bit more than the Tunze but its WAY less distracting and one supplemented (if needed) with some other flow would rock your world. You can't beat the wetside footprint and being upgradeable is huge.

Also slow is good...better to be slow and make wise choices than rush in and have something you're not happy with and cannot change. Just ask Mothra...he's been patiently building up his gear for his monster tank.
