Starting my propogation business...

Yes the wholesalers told me what they want. I even spitballed the idea with one group where they are willing to send me the best and unique specimens they come across automatically for the purpose of me propagating them and selling them back in steady supply. Also a wholesaler gave me a list of things they knew we could mutually profit from because of recent unavailibility from wild harvests and a list of corals to be banned from wild harvests by CITES in the near future. As for my quarantining, it's relatively simple. Nothing elaborate, but hopefully it will prove just as effective. Let's just say pest algeas and parasites are not a concern at this time.

Can you share pictures of what your setup looks like?

Interesting thread I will be sure to follow it along to see your progress, thanks for sharing :wavehand:

This is news to me, can you elaborate ? an international ban on certain coral species would be a massive boost for the coral aquaculture industry.

There's been a petition to ban about 80 corals in place for several years, so far no action on it though. In 2010 CITES rejected banning about 30 types of coral, I think only the US backed that one. Keep in mind that import from Fiji got banned in the US because Fiji wasn't complying with CITES rules, so there are some teeth in the laws as well.

You're welcome oceanarium! Reeftanknewbie, when I have the tanks setup, I will be sure to post pictures. However my progress has been pushed back about a month. I decided after I concrete over the problem spots on the walls, I'm going to wood frame it out a bit (1x1in "studs") then spend the $ on closed cell spray insulation. It will be far more effecient, create a vapor barrier, but also hurt my cash flow. But, the way I see it, I need to just do it all right the first time instead of an "it will do for now" kind of mentality. Today I hope to knock out the last of the pressure washing, so this coming Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday I can concrete the wall.

ill travel for work :) love reefing --->

Yeah, I don't think I can pay much of anything besides food and beer. I would feel bad about you driving from a nearby town to give me a hand, much less half way across the country! Thanks for the offer though :). Maybe when I am more comfortably funded and begin stages 2 and 3 of my business plan (which include the construction of a greenhouse(s)), you can help then. Besides, what most people don't realize that when it's a business, it doesn't seem like reef keeping. No sexy display tanks with tons of different corals, no insane sump setups, not even expensive lighting systems. It's a different world when you do things for profit.

yeah , for sure . im still really small ..just starting up too. i can go from my prop setup to my displays in around 60 feet lol . im sure you already posted it but are you going to run all the systems on controllers ?? you need atleast one display , it makes lunch much more relaxing :)

Do it right the first time is always more cost effective in the long run.

No, my "tanks" Wont be on any controllers. Keeping it simple. Maybe in the distant future where I have large amounts of excess income that meets to be spent for tax deductions, but until then, no.

i "have" a controller, but its not hooked up....
if i were you, i would look into the cheap ones that have internet capabilities and graphing.
this way you can drop your temp and ph probes in the tank and monitor them while your at your other job. and at home.

you can set them up with alarms if temp gets x deg. and have them shut lights off it it exceeds x temp.

i would use them more for alerts and stuff then actual maintaining of tanks.
but it would be nice to have them shut off a few lights to keep your tank from getting too hot and having problems.

some will allert and you can log on to the internet and manually turn x things off.
just a thought.

Right now each tank will be 250 gallons with a single 400W metal halide overhead. Overheating shouldn't be an issue with evaporation constantly taking place (note the 3ft exaust fan in the thumbnail). A radiant gas heater on the ceiling will also hopefully solve the heating issue in the winter. Right now daily checks of temp and a standard box fan works just fine at keeping the temp more than reasonable. PH doesn't need to be checked much at all with the way I plan to have things set up.

The SMS units are very handy but as you say can be very exy to set up. Same with auto mains fail systems but you can probably find some cheaper alternatives to monitor some of the important things that can cause a wipe out.

I bought a burglar alarm for my own set up for around $500 it will SMS when power fails and when temps exceed or fall below set parameters not to mention burglars looking for the drugs i know several people who have been burgled doing props by thieves looking for maruanah or the pumps, lights etc to grow it! All it needs is a SIM card to operate.

I do have a auto mains diesel generator but the fuel is not limitless. Twice now once a bush fire and a storm took out our power for days without it we would not have been able to maintain our live stock.

I am subscribing to this thread, this is very exciting. Hey man, best of luck. I truly hope everything goes well and you make a ton of money doing something you love.

@antimatter originally I planned to have tanks going by the start of august which would mean I would start harvests around the turn of the year (if all goes well). Right now that date has been pushed back to getting tanks in by the end of august and hopefully harvesting by Feb of next year. It's pushed back because I'm going to need to frame out the garage with 1x1 studs, insulate it, redo the doors, perhaps get a drain hole connecting to the storm drain, get a water spigot working in the garage, do a floor treatment to waterproof it, and install a radiant heater. Jeeze... Maybe shooting for the end of august is aiming a bit high.
