sterilizing quarantine tank

I just did a search and came up empty handed. I am wondering what is the best way to sterilize a quarantine tank?

I have cleaned it out really well and was thinking of wiping it down with alcohol before setting it back up.

Anyone have any good info on this?

Using a little bleach might help.

Make sure you wash it really well afterwards, and you will have a sterile QT tank.

Honestly the only way to "sterilize" is not to kill the bacteria, but rather let the fishes defence system handle the virus/bacteiral infection.

Best way to accomplish this is feed that fish like mad! Watever food that fish will eat will only make it stronger.

I have uv, and it does not eliminate ich, ect.




Well after reading your post just now :lol: I realize your talking about cleaning the tank and not using uv. LOL. Anyways to kill the bacteria you can:

hydrogen peroxide it. Bleach it(i dont like that meathode, gotta use dechlorinator afterwatards)

For calcium build up vinigar or Muriatic acid(very strong 100x vinigar)

I always use bleach (non scented/non soap) and let it sit for a few hours. Then all you have to do is rinse it really well a couple times and let it air dry. The bleach will evaporate. no need to use dechlorinator unless you want to put it back in use right away. Been doing it this way for years and haven't had a problem so far.

I do the same as navajo. Mix up a 20:1 water bleach mixture, soak everything for about 10 minutes, and then rinse the tank itself with a dedicated sponge.

I know I'm nitpicking here, but the term is sanitize not sterilize.

I don't have any peroxide and the bleach doesn't sound too good either. I will probably let it dry really well and set it back up from there. The tank has been empty for about 4 months and I was just trying to make sure that it would be safe for another fish to be moved to it.

If alcohol won't work then I am gonna skip it.

AHHH! If it's been dry for 4 months, there is no need to SANITIZE (HEHEHEHE) it. Nothing is still alive in there. Just a quick rinse for any dust and you're on your way.

It hasn't been dry for four months it has had water in it. It hasn't had any fish in there for four months.

There is at least one pathogen I can think of that has been proven to survive in a dried out aquarium for months, Mycobacterium. Bleach works well to sterilize things.

I use Iodophor for my home brew. It kills everything. Same type of stuff restaurants use to sterilize barware.
