Stichodactyla mertensii

Has anyone been able to find Stichodactyla mertensii anemones within the past year or so?Iv been looking for them and havent seen them.But youll never know what other people can find!Also has anyone seen any Heterodactyla hemprichii?

Mertins pop up on Divers Den from time to time, they're not as uncommon as first thought, just often misslabelled in many stores IME.

Hemprich's are a cool anemone, fish eaters though and pack and real punch in their sting. Haven't seen any first hand in an age but I remember seeing them on reef hotspot a while back.

I talked with both places and ReefHotSpot says that theres only one lady in the world righ now that can get Mertens and on DD Iv never seen them.

Hemprich's havent seen for some time like you said.May never get one...:thumbdown

I bought one recently from a fellow hobbiest in my club, he had it a long time and was tearing down his tank:sad2:. It is Beautiful purple/pink color, about 20inches across and is doing great. I got a great deal $60 with the pair of clarki's hosting it! I looked forever for any healthy carpet already in captivity. I know I just got lucky finding a Stichodactyla mertensii

Considering merten's wide-spread natural habitat, I have very difficult time believing ReefHotSpot. Sounds like hype creation in progress

I have the opportunity to purchase a mertensii from a fellow reefer but the best info I can find about their care is similar to all other carpets. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations? Is a 90 gallon DT with a lot of live rock big enough for this animal?

I think your tank is big enough, as long as you don't have much corals around it. My Mertensii sits its oral disc on the rocks, with its foot wedged in the rocks, and haven't moved since I placed it there. I bought mine from reefscience.com and haven't seen another one on that site since then. Some people say I paid too much for it, but I think it was worth every penny. You don't see these anemones very often in the trade. When I finally saw one I jumped on it.

I think the degree of availability in the trade has more to do with their size (often huge) and their color (often drab) than it has to do with their frequency in the wild.

Here is a picture. It has been in the tank only two weeks, but seems to be doing great. I was able to transition the pair of clarki's that have been hosting in it for a long time. Boy are they protective, we will have to see how they work out. The tank is 600 gallons with lots of flow and a 400 watt 20k, MH right above him. I have been feeding him slivers of salmon a couple times a week, with an aggresive feeding response.

That is not a S. mertensii. It is a S. gigantea.
